From what I've read, it's already started. But its still really early in the process. And they've put SNES on one, too. That intrigues me more than anything. And if the iPod touch gen 2 and iPhone 3GS can emulate PSone games, I'm sure the iPad can too. The only problem is the clunky touch controls, which is fine for turn based games like Final Fantasy, but sucks for fighters or racing games.
I may have to go to the apple store this weekend to check one out.

I'm behind on my jailbroken iPhone 3G (not the 3GS version sadly) but I still like my iPhone and I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon, does what I need it to do for most of my daily needs and I'm still on 3.1.2 firmware too.
I'm still on 3.0.1 or something. There's no reasonably convenient update method given a jailbroken iphone. I was thinking of backing up /var/mobile, doing the jailbreak, then copying it back over the old one, but I dont' know how well that'll work.
Although I'm never going to buy an iPad, I do want to see how well they work.
I was planning to go to the Apple store on 14th St. today to check one out, but stuff came up.
Anyway, I'm fine with my sturdy 1st-gen iPod touch.
Its kind of a shame Apple didn't use OS X for the iPad, not that it really matters though since the underlying hardware is probably different anyways (correct me if I'm wrong), would of loved to get one if only that were true.
Yeah, it's still ARM. Apple A4. Cortex-A8+SGX 535, though with a different lithography process than the iphone's CPU, and a different revision, so it's considerably faster, and runs at a higher clock speed.
Although OSX likely could've been ported, the interface would've been rather inappropriate, that's why they used iphone OS. Iphone OS isn't too far off from Mac OS, though, at the core. Same Darwin kernel and UNIX/BSD stuff.
Would be nice if they just threw an intel atom in there. I'd like a reasonable tablet that can run windows or linux... though not sure if I'd still buy it. I'm waiting on my Pandora, still.
They could have easily ported a touch friendly version of OSX on to the iPad. But I think they wanted to stick with the iPhone OS model since it creates loads of revenue in apps. If it came with OSX, they wouldn't be able to restrict what you can get on it as they can with the iPhone OS. I am looking forward to seeing the HP slate as they did just that. They are making it more of a PC by putting Windows 7 on it, modified for a touch screen friendly medium. Exciting times!
And now I'm at an Apple store posting from an iPad. I gotta admit: it's a lot slicker than I thought it'd be!
The on-screen keyboard is easy enough to type on when it's lying on its back.
Those screens can take a lot of abuse, though. They can suck your fingerprints off from across the room, but my first-gen iPod touch has yet to accumulate a single scratch on its screen. It's tough to type on that little thing sometimes though, I have large hands. An iPad seems like overkill; I use my iPod as ... an iPod.
The HP Slate looks promising, but ... it's HP. I wouldn't get any kind of PC from them given the problems I've had with HP products in general. And ... it's a keyboard-less netbook? Gimme a machine with a real keyboard (even a condensed laptop keyboard) over a touch-based one anyday.
