Actually, it just seems like one CD's needed for the base install. That's no problem, I'll grab it at school.

My concern is whether or not it'll actually be very usable. I'm just looking for something to bring around with me and use when DSL won't work completely on a computer

Has anyone had any experiences with Sabayon Linux? I was thinking of giving it a whirl. I've never used anything that wasn't based on Debain, and was thinking of trying something new. Sabayon is based on Gentoo, so if you've used anything similar, your comments and opinions on that would be appreciated too.

I've only really used older versions of Ubuntu and its counterparts with different default environments (and I've also tried Ubuntu Studio.) I haven't really run anything that isn't Debian-derived.

Mainly if I use Linux at all anymore it's a Knoppix LiveCD (altered to use fluxbox instead of kde. i likes me some fluxbox) or a gparted rescue disc.

If Linux had better compatibility I'd use it. But there's no better music app than Logic in my opinion; Linux doesn't offer anything quite like it. Also ... WINE is great and all, but it still can't run everything.

Plus there's also the tendency of me fiddling around too much with customization and getting distracted, and screwing up trying to add features to device drivers and things and ruining my installation of whatever. I really only use it as a utility for diagnosing problems anymore. :/

Oh yeah. I use Red Hat at work, but they've got each workstation set up so that gnome looks almost exactly like Windows does in the default Classic appearance. No top panel, etc. They even swapped out the icons for the OpenOffice apps with ones from Office 97; I'm not kidding. I only end up using like three different apps though and Red Hat is not that different from anything else I've used.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I used Sabayon for a bit a few years ago, when the install CD came with a demo of quake 4. It was OK. Pretty much seemed like Gentoo with a different base and some overlays, so nothing to foreign. Might actually be a decent transition, since it has the up and ready-ness of Ubuntu, but being Gentoo at it's core, will let you kinda get dirty, and really not break too much for doing so.

I've used a lot of distros (Red Hat, Mandriva, Ubuntu, openSUSE). Of those the one I had the best experience with was Mandriva. openSUSE might have been better, but I had trouble writing the DVD and had to get the crippled CD version that couldn't easily be upgraded to the full version through downloads as I had hoped.

I've used Windows exclusively for about a year now though. I may try Linux again, but I do play PC games frequently.

Let's see...

The distro I ran for the longest time was Ubuntu 9.10 'Karmic', which was for only 2 months since the linuxwacom package doesn't support my Wacom Bamboo Pen and Touch tablet officially and hot-swapping my tablet could not be done when I used a patch to get my tablet in semi-working order. Running one of the linux distros out there was a neat experience, but I feel as though it isn't really ready yet for all PC's, though it can still work for most PC's as long as one's not using an unsupported device.

Perhaps someday I will give ubuntu or other linux distro another try, but for now I'll stay with Windows 7 x64.

I'm on Debian right now, but it's giving me some problems and I really dislike their policy on software updates. It's either stick with software that's 18 months out of date, or have the absolute bleeding-edge likely-to-spontaneously-break version of everything.
It seems like it's an unusual and to some even unreasonable request to have the latest tested stable versions of things, but be notified when a new, untested version of a program is out, and have the option of upgrading to it, with the ability to roll back if it turns out to be a turd. You'd think this would be a pretty common request.
I guess Arch is supposed to be like that, but in trying to get it to install in an encrypted filesystem, all I managed to do was put it in an infinite loop a few times and crash it.

I left Ubuntu because the 9.10 "upgrade" just broke the hell out of all sorts of things and 9.04 was getting horribly out of date. Way to test there guys.

That's exactly what Debian Backports is for.

I actually just moved back from 9.10 to Windows 7 again, on my PC.

9.10 has to be the most unstable thing I've used. It runs fine on 64-bit (color me completely surprised, what), but the 32-bit versions... app crashes galore and apparent reduced performance.

I can't wait until 10.04. I like what they did with the interface, too...

I use Kubuntu under VirtualBox now, since I didn't feel like messing with partitions on this computer. I tend to prefer KDE and XFCE better than GNOME for some reason, and I also use the Kubuntu VM for stuff like app testing, Linux-only software, and Wine testing. =D

I've used GNOME and KDE and I prefer KDE. The top menu bar in GNOME weirds me out. I'd think you'd be more used to it, Schala, because don't Macs have those?

I also like the powerful window management in KDE, like being able to set any window to go above or below the other windows. Does GNOME have that too? I know Windows doesn't.

I was particularly using gnome for a while when I was using ubuntu, yeah it is kind of weird having the bar at the top like in finder for mac. I was actually using the 'gnome2-globalmenu' mac-like menubar and thought it was kind of neat, except I would have to disable this for certain apps since I would not get an accurate menu for apps that like to change their menus (such as the msn clones out there) and didn't really fit the true mac-like experience for me.

I stand by KDE since I have used KDE in the past when Mandriva used to be known as Mandrake, my next linux distro I choose will most likely be of the KDE interface, rather than gnome.

I use OpenBSD, because it doesn’t get in my way. Probably not for everyone but it works nearly how I want it.

My sister uses Ubuntu, and I don’t care for it. Half‐working graphics driver leading to constant freezing, sound randomly cutting out, upgrades breaking everything, and a pasted‐on GUI that hides the complexity just enough for you to not be able to fix things.

Also, lightweight window managers rock.

Oh hey this thread's a year old.

Letting it slide since I'd rather not have a bunch of 10-reply threads cluttering up the thread list :V
