What's your preference for a pointing device?

As for me, I pretty much must have an optical mouse with a scroll wheel. Ball mice get dirty and show jerky movement pretty quickly and they never seem to work quite the same even after cleanings. I'm so used to using the scroll wheel that I struggle with older programs that didn't support it.

Touchpads are my least favourite, especially with the tap-to-click option on. There are buttons underneath every touchpad I ever recall seeing that are used to click, and it's so easy to tap accidentally, so why did tap-to-click become the standard and default option? I'd rather be able to get a laptop with no touchpad and a full 105-key keyboard and just use an external mouse without the touchpad taking up space.

I hate regular mice to death. Moving my arm hurts over time. On the other hand, with my handy thumb-trackball, I can get extra precision and it doesn't wear my hand out.

...

Yeah, I'm weird.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I prefer mice, with scroll wheels.

Touch screens are nice, but not a replacement for a mouse... though I think it's mostly that most programs are made with a mouse in mind, and there aren't really any particularly convenient analogies for right clicking with a touch screen, without some kind of fancy system with a stylus, and that's usually for higher end tablet stuff.

I think what would be best would be a plain touch screen where you can use your fingers or stylus, but have actual click keys so you can place the cursor (for hovering). This is a big thing that breaks most touch interfaces is there's no way to just move or place the cursor, without clicking. This would also allow for stuff like right clicking or even MIDDLE CLICKING or clicking whatever combinations you want. :o

Trackballs are alright and laptop trackpads are just a disaster and I feel the same way about the tap to click shit, especially when I'm using my sister's laptop.

Another thing I found surprisingly nice was a thumbstick on my PS1 controller for mouse. If you had a decent ramp for velocity, you'd probably get some decent precision, while still being able to fly around real fast when needed.

I'm gonna say that I prefer the mouse with scroll-wheel, but as of a good couple of months I've been using my notebook PC touchpad more and more than a mouse.

On another note, I used to own and use a serial based trackball mouse, not sure what happened to it though since it got lost a long time ago.

As of writing this post, I seem to be the only one who has voted touchpad. Reason is, I generally use my laptop in a semi-lying down position, and that makes it uncomfortable to use the mouse. Besides, through continued use, I'm more accustomed to using a touchpad now.

Mouse, though sometimes the tablet is fun to use.

I do need a trackball, though, since I have little room on my desk, but meh.

Mouse... since I've tried a trackball before, but didn't really like it that much... also, I miss the old days when computers typically had only one or two mouse buttons, instead of two buttons, two side buttons, and a scroll wheel. =/

Logitech MX518 optical mouse. Nice comfortable design, with forward/back buttons right next to the thumb, a window button (extremely useful for window management bindings in Compiz), and adjustable resolution.

I just wish I could remap the resolution buttons to function as actual buttons (the program just crashes) but it's fantastic otherwise.

If I must use a laptop touchpad the first thing I do is disable that fucking tap-to-click "feature". Who uses that? Annoys the fuck out of me.

Lain's post №869

Not really a preference per se, but I currently use a Microsoft® Optical Wireless Mouse 2000. It came with my Microsoft® Wireless Keyboard 1000.

It actually works quite well. :p

For home, my mouse needs at least 5 buttons. Forward and back buttons build in is so handy for web browsing. It comes in handy for gaming, too. The back button the side of the mouse is my auto run button in World of Warcraft and forward button is my pet attack button. I know there are others out there with like 400 buttons on the mouse, but thats too much for me.

I've tried using a trackball but I didn't care for it. I used one of my brother's (he used it for auto-cad) for a few days a long time ago but I just couldn't take to it.

As for a touchpad... they're ok in a pinch but if I'm using a laptop for anything more than browsing the web, I have to get out my wireless mouse.

A mouse with a scroll wheel like I have at home. I can't remember the brand, but I've had it for a long time.

Mouse and touchpad, here. I have to disable tap-to-click, though.

As for my favorite mouse? I did have some random AOpen mouse I loved, but it just kept getting knocked down and I replaced it with a mostly-as-usable Logitech EX100 or something.

I'm going to sound very weird here, but I remember really, really liking the mice that came with iMac G3s (the "hockey puck" mouse). Too bad it's only a single button.

The great thing about this mouse is it's advertised not for gaming... but for spreadsheets. Seriously. OpenOffice specifically. One of the applications that would most benefit from good keyboard shortcuts, and instead they create this monstrosity.

Heh, might be good for Blender.

Also, something I forgot. I like either a horizontal scroll wheel or one that tilts to the sides... though the tilt can be annoying when trying to middle-click, because if you hit it at an angle, it'll tilt to the side and feel like you clicked, and it'll cancel out in some programs if you tilt and middle click.

Mouse.

Must:
  • Be optical. Ball mice should die (and luckily, most have).
  • Have a scroll wheel. I fall back to page up/page down if I'm using a moue with no wheel, but those keys don't work everywhere.
  • Be comfortable (obviously).

Should:
  • Have back/forward buttons. I realize that I use the 'back' button on my mouse whenever I use one that doesn't have it.
  • Be wired. Don't have to worry about random disconnections or needing to charge the thing.

When I'm on my laptop, I use the touchpad just so I don't have to worry about carrying around a mouse or leaving it somewhere.
  • Tap-to-click on
  • Two-finger scrolling on, because the 'scrolling edge' of my touchpad is very hard to find without looking
  • Two-finger tap to middle click
  • Touch with one finger, then tap with the other to right click

I basically never use the physical left/right click buttons below the touchpad.

Mouse, Wireless.

Rechargable cell is a must.
Scroll wheel, preferably one that is latched w/ left and right scrolling (tilt the wheel stuff)
Smoothed bottom (mine has pads with teflon in them)
Decent battery life
Forward/Back buttons.
Preferably a second wheel for switching applications
Compatible with Generic windows drivers.

Nobody else uses a trackball? Go me.

Also, I forgot to mention, my trackball is like the one out of the computer from Minority Report. I guess I live in the future.

(Well, not really. Logitech just designed both products.)

I have a trackball on my old computer. I actually usually forget I'm using a different pointing device, so it's not bad if you don't notice it, I guess. :p

A laptop trackpad is definitely noticeable, though. Noticeably shit.

Anything with less than 15 buttons is inferior.

This mouse was surprisingly easy to get used to and it pains me to use my friend's mouse from time to time. Hell, he used to hate mine but now he's used to how high I set my sensitivity and he won't get off my fucking computer half the time!
