Ok, this isn't a huge problem but it can be irritating. I shut my computer completely off every night because it makes just enough sound and has just enough light to keep me up. I like total silence and blackness when I sleep. I don't put it in standby, I don't put it in hibernate, I just shut it completely off. Anyway, every now and then, seemingly at random, my computer will just decide to turn itself on in the middle of the night, waking me up, and annoying the piss out of me.

I have wake up on LAN turn off, I don't have anything scheduled to automatically run, or turn itself on. It just randomly happens. The only way I can ensure It won't wake me up that night is if I turn off the power supply, but frankly that's kind of a hassle to do every night, so I just take my chances.

I'm running Windows 7 right now, but it would do this even when I ran XP.

My computer used to have similar problems, but they seemed to be from overheating.

Have you tried to clean out the interior from dust and the like? Even if it won't fix your problem it will surely make your computer feel better in general.


Other than that, no idea how to fix it, I decided to just have my on 24/7 instead of fixing it.

Oh yeah I clean it out regularly with a full blown air compressor. I don't think dust buildup is the problem.

I would just leave mine on 24/7, but unfortunately its in the same room that I sleep in and I don't want to move it.

It could be a virus connecting to a botnet, but I have never heard of a computer turning -on- from off before. :/

If it's a stationary then maybe see if you can get another power supply and switch them out?

At least to check if it fixes the problem.

I've run several scans recently and nothing has turned up any viruses or malware. I could switch out the power supply, but really, I don't consider this thing to be a enough of a major issue to justify getting a new piece of hardware just to see if it was the problem. I don't have a spare power supply just lying around, so that would mean making a pretty superfluous purchase just to satisfy curiosity. But really that's all I can think of doing too. I'm guessing that somehow every now and then it gets a power surge from somewhere causing it to turn on, so I can only assume that its something power supply related, but I really have no clue.

Also, I have no idea if this is related or not, but every now and then, usually late at night while the computer is still on, I will hear a VERY LOUD CRACK! Like it sounds like someone either shot, or threw a firecracker in my computer! I'm not even sure that its my computer that's making the noise, but it seems to come from that general area of my room. I leave the side panel off of my computer case, mainly because I'm too lazy to put it back on, so all I can guess is maybe some bug crawled in and got fried? But even then, my computer works perfectly fine through the whole thing, and I've never found bug guts or saw any sparks so I really don't know. The cracking happens a lot less often that the random turning on though.

If Wake on LAN is disabled in the BIOS, that shouldn't be happening.

You're absolutely sure the machine is actually shutting down? The default behavior in recent versions of Windows is to hibernate on capable machines. Some systems rarely have a BIOS option where they go into a low-powered state similar to hibernation instead of turning every component completely off.

I suppose ... it could also be a symptom of the CMOS battery losing its charge. If your system clock is not accurate right after booting up, it's a sure sign that the battery has a problem. Most motherboards will display a message about the battery's voltage being low at startup (unless it's hidden behind some splash screen for whatever brand of PC you have.)

And this is really a stretch, ... but sometimes electrical interference can cause odd things to happen.

You know my computer's clock does have the tendency to gain time fairly quickly. Maybe it is a battery issue? But my motherboard hasn't been giving me any low battery warnings.

Also, every time I turn my computer on, I have to sit and wait for it to load all of its processes up again, so I doubt that it is actually going into hibernation mode when I think its shutting down. Plus, when I first installed 7 I double checked to make sure that all power settings were set to turn off and not hibernate, standby etc. I'm about to double check BIOS to see if something is set weird, got reset to default etc, but I doubt I'll find anything as this has been going on for quite a while in spite of any BIOS changes made in the past 2 years.

If you shut down your computer, unplug it, then plug it back in, does it turn on? If so, you may have electrical issues. A surge protector is always a good idea. (Not all power strips are surge protectors.)

There might be a BIOS option to change what your computer does after a power failure; you could try changing that.

This. It could be something wrong with the electrical outlet it's plugged into. If there's something wrong with the mobo, or power switch it may very well be turning on by itself just because it lost power. First, do as Joe said and unplug the machine, wait a few second, and plug it back in.

I've checked all the BIOS settings, including the one that controls what it does in case of a power surge, and everything was already set to either "disabled" or "turn off" in case of power failure. I've tried unplugging it a long time ago to see if that was the case, but when I plugged it back in, it stayed off. Tried it again a little while ago when I was checking BIOS, same thing. I know I don't have a surge protector though, so maybe somehow that allows it to randomly get electrical charge? I don't know.

No, no, this is the power supply. I had an eMachine which would turn on and off at its own will.

Those cracks are the capacitors slowly going bad. You'll probably want a new PSU, ASAP, unless your outlet has constant shortages or something--unlikely.

The power supply is converting energy as long as it's plugged in and the little switch on the back is set to on (it should have one unless it's older than Methuselah) and if the capacitors are going, it can short itself on and off at random.

On the other hand, if your computer has no switch on the back, and has two plugs on the back (one for an integrated monitor plug-in cable), then you have an AT PSU. Dangerous even when they are in good condition (they run the entire household current up to the power button), I would fear for you if you have one of those that is going wonky.

Oooh, ok NOW I can justify buying a new PSU! Oh well, I could probably use one with a higher wattage anyway. I've never upgraded a psu before though. I'm assuming they come with instructions that will show me how to properly install it?

And this computer is fairly recent so it does have a switch in the back. And no I don't have any cats.

Installation should be a matter of plugging the one big plug into the only place it fits on the mainboard, plugging the 4-pin connectors into anything that needs one, and screwing it into place. If you have a brand-name machine though there's a possibility it uses a stupid proprietary PSU and then you never know what to expect.

I had my computer assembled through CyberpowerPC because I wasn't confident enough to build it myself, so nothing on it is proprietary. That said, what can I do to make sure I pick out a good one? Are there any brands I should avoid when considering Power Supplies? My current power supply is an Apevia if that means anything.

I've found Newegg to be a pretty good indicator of what is worth buying and what isn't. Just look for products with a lot of good ratings that have been available for a while (to ensure people have had time to break it in and whatnot).
