Almost happened to mine. I've taped it a bit, so it's better, though I'm scared that it'll break once...
Also, sometimes when I open it, the top screen is white in a certain position. My friends DS lite's top screen was always like that. I hope this won't happen to my DS...

Seeing all those problems people seem to have with lites makes me really happy that I use an ordinary phat one.

Has worked perfectly since release.

I have this problem too!

Not to mention the shoulder buttons are wasted and rarely work anymore!

Yeah, the shoulder buttons are dead on mine too. Got them to work again a few times for Mario Kart by blowing really hard, but it won't help anymore.

My Phat had a number of problems - most notably it was scratched and worn to hell and the shoulder buttons weren't working anymore. I bought a Lite to replace it, and shortly the shoulder buttons failed on it too. I got it "repaired" under warranty and the repair only lasted a week. The second time, they gave up and replaced it with one that still seems alright, though I can never manage to get the smudges off the screen.

The problem definitely isn't limited to one model. Nintendo's stuff just isn't as durable as it once was.

Nothing is as durable now as 10-20 years ago.

My GBC keeps on ticking, the poor thing. After I dropped it so many times too...

Sadly true, but old Nintendo stuff was like it was made of rock. I'd heard of Game Boys being run over by cars and still working. Try that with a DS.

GBC has a weakpoint: The screen.

The only Nintendo systems that badly failed on me were several front-loading NESes and, well, they were front-loading NESes. After a while, they'd often start up to a flashing or grey screen, and if the game did play, there were often regularly-spaced vertical lines on the screen. (Anyone know what causes those?)

Hence why I prefer emulation.

I'm of the opinion that the AV Famicom is the most durable thing Nintendo ever made. The Game Boy would have been #1 if it weren't for the LCD deterioration (vertical columns of pixels gradually start disappearing from the sides of the screen over time). It's affected every original model Game Boy I've ever seen.

Maybe not run over, but my DS has taken a lot of punishment (the latest being dropped onto the corner of my desk from a few feet up or onto concrete) and still keeps ticking. Yay DS Phat.

My GBC still works, but the speaker is broken... but at least I can still use headphones for the sound. =P

Also, I can say the same with Apple products: many old (68K and early PPC) Macintoshes and Apple IIs, as well as old Apple keyboards and mice, are still running today, yet stuff like newer Macs, iPods and iPhones tend to fail within a couple of years...

My old GB has gone through more punishment than possible, and of course, still works.
Though the speaker and the lid for batteries are broken.

Actually even the old GBA was quite indestructible. It's just this closing screen stuff that makes the consoles that fragile.

True. My brother stepped on my arctic GBA, screen broke, but it took tons of other punishment.

GBASP? Screen is all messed up unless you hold it the right way. It also never got dropped or anything. :/

Yeah, the screen. The GBA is how I learned to stop putting things in my back pocket during 7th or 8th grade. Short story: I fell on my ass. Screen got a lot of black thanks to that.
(My SP never had any problem on its screen when I used it. Huh)

My original GB still ticks away perfectly. i don't even think those loss of lines that BMF mentioned has happened. The only thing that's wrong with it is that the glue holding the screen covering in place has dried up so the covering can fall out. A rubber band around it solves the problem though.

My DS Phat got sold for $40 to my roommate and now I've got my XL which I just love. So big and bright...

Super Mario Bros. presented each sprite as one or two tiles of code/addresses.

Dirty connectors on the CHR-ROM side of the cartridge, most likely.
