And no, this is NOT a joke. It's for real.

-50% more 8x8 tile space by using new BG2 and BG3 GFX slots.
-4X more Map16 FG and BG space
-Totally re-vamped ExAnimation dialogs
-BGs are now 512 pixels tall instead of 432, effectively removing "BG garbage" forever.
-Plenty more small changes, check the readme.

SMWCentral is encountering a few issues with it, my theory is that since a lot of "under the hood" changes were made, 1.7 conflicts with 1.6x, causing some glitches. Porting everything to a clean rom is probably the safest way to use the program. But yeah, after 5 years, a REAL update to LM is released.

This too will be perfect for my new hack
Ah by the way, this new one has some problems, so i'd wait to start to edit with this new version.
But yes, i love this: it improved in graphics of sure.

Edit: 1st post =P

Oh. My. God.

This took me completely off guard, I honestly didn't expect it but the updates sound awesome! It would have been nice if he had opened access to all those Test levels (as in, making them accessible from the overworld), it would have opened the door to much bigger hacks.

So after seeing the sheer number of errors and bugs SMWC's users are encountering, I'm tentatively calling this a joke release because while the new features are there, the amount of bugginess caused by the program upon edited roms is just too much for Fusoya and his beta testers to have not caught and fixed.

So, use it at your own risk, a lot of people are planning on waiting until tomorrow to see if a true version 1.7 is released.

With that much bugginess, I'm pretty sure that either A) it's a joke, or B) it was a major rush-job to try and get it out for 4/1. Guess we'll see if we get 1.71 within the next short while or not.

I'm amazed at the sheer amount of MAP16 space available now. To think I had a hard time filling 16 pages

But seriously, How do they get all those bugs? For example, i try to insert ExGFX (not in BG3 and BG4) with LM17, but there is no bug. mah.
What's up with the Chocobo in the OW? is that agentQ's creation or something made by LM?

Then, i don't think Fusoya would leave LM17 buggy even tomorrow, it would be disappointing.

The Chocobo is an april fools joke built into LM. LM has easter eggs built in that take effect depending on system date.

Sukasa: I know, it's so much space! I never used up anywhere near that much but for people with lots of graphics, it's perfect!

i wonder how it came up: i tried to save the rom with the new LM and it is absent: i wonder

but for people with lots of graphics, it's perfect!

Just wait me

I'm sceptical, but didn't he release an update on 4/1 before?

If it's for real, I'm curious about the VRAM improvements. Did he rewrite the horribly inefficient VRAM layout/transfer routines? I tried to do that for a hack a while ago, but never quite got it working.

I'll have to try that hack again sometime, if not...

He didn't make the VRAM changes, smkdan made the patch. Fusoya simply implemented the patch's changes into LM's various ASM hacks.

So it seems like the editor is not a joke but everyone thinks so because of the glitches. However, myself and a few others are beginning to think that's it's for real, the issue is just that the editor changes a lot of the ASM used in the editor now, which conflicts with hacks made in older versions of the editor, causing all the issues people are running into. So either port to a new rom before continuing your hacks or keep using the older version until you finish it.

Okay, so what's the verdict? Do the bugs only affect previously edited ROMs, i.e. is it safe to start a project from scratch in 1.7? FuSoYa already stated on his site that the number of ASM modifications might affect compatibility with older hacks, so nobody should really be surprised that things are breaking.

Ah, so it's just that VRAM improvement patch from before, with LM updated to support the functionality it adds? That's cool.

Actually, that means I could base my hack on that patch, if it doesn't already do what I needed. (i.e. copy level tilemap into VRAM more efficiently - the original code copies the entire screen every frame.)

Still, you think he would have tested with several existing ROMs and patches, and made sure it doesn't break them. I read the SMWC posts and people are reporting it trashed their levels in some cases.

(I still wish he'd release the source... *grumble*)

(oh and you don't really need to quote all that empty space in my post. I just added that because I couldn't find a more legitimate way to pad its length, and this flipped image just looks weird in short posts. )

Anyone who honestly thinks Fu would release a bugged/fake version of LM--an editor used by thousands of people for some pretty major projects--as an April Fool's joke needs to have their head examined. Anyone who did something that stupid would essentially be throwing their reputation in the crapper, and Fu is far from stupid.

I don't think he released a buggy editor as a joke. I do think he released a buggy editor, and should have been able to get the bugs worked out before release.

I think it was reported that so far only one clean rom error has been noticed and that's that you can't highlight-select Tile 25 (blank tile) with the drag-selection, only by clicking it, but other than that I think it's mostly okay. Don't quote me on this though.

I suppose I could try this to make a level.

I hardly hack anyways, so... yeah. And I need to practice.

About the tile 25: I don't think this is a bug: i think it is for prevent people selecting and putting that tile: WHY THE HECK would you place a blank tile with no graphics in a level????
I think FuSoYa wanted to implement this for some reasons than above's one..

Probably to cover up garbage or template tiles. I remember actually seeing this technique used in Demo World, having it open in LM, and I've used it myself in a couple old hacks.
