After watching a video from the Alan Titchmarsh show, I wrote this.

What are your thoughts about violence in video games?

I personally don't like any kind of realistic violence, and the more realistic and/or gorey, the less I like it. Some violence-based games are fun to me, but many seem to be just mindless violence.

Edit: Ultimately, it's the responsibility of the parents to make sure their kids aren't playing anything that isn't appropriate for them.

Fictional violence, like Final Fantasy, is much safer than stuff like Grand Theft Auto, in my opinion... since face it, you can't expect to cast magic in real life. =P

Also, they really need to stop censoring stuff like partial nudity or profanity in video games, too...

That video was filled with soccer moms and fisher dads. I loved it how the woman claimed that "She was against violence as a form of entertainment" and we have sports that are violent. Football, Wrestling, paintball, hunting, and more. She really should back up a little bit and come to her senses that not everyone out there in the world is the same. You can list all of the personal feelings you have against violent videogames but there will never be that one comment that justifies for the rest of the gamers out there. It's humanist (word I used like racist, sexist) to be the woman in that video and shun us for liking violence. Fuck that bitch up her stupid ass.

And that critical study they mentioned? Instead of the videogames they played, they should have also investigated with the parents.

There was a study just like this and it was featured in my area in the early 90s about how kids who watch Mighty Morphing Power rangers turned out to be much more violent than kids who didn't. So they did the tests with the show, an entertainment show (Like from PBS), and another show that had absolutely no violent in them. After the kids watched all three shows on three different days. Guess what? The kids were still play fighting out in the playground. The shows themself isn't the problem, in fact, I am sure kids know what is real and what isn't so long as you have a parent there to teach children about it.

As a kid, my mother saw me playing Command and Conquer and flipped out over this scene.

<object width="640" height="385"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/mPjEdRSt0AA&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

Can't say I blame her. It was interactive for it's time (Choosing the NOD, a terrorist group), it had real actors, and the effects actually made it look like that guy really got shot in the head. Why? Because he was backstabbing the leader and wanted to go up against America by invading the pentagon.

My dad came home, saw the clip, and basically shrugged and asked me if I learned anything. "It's not real"

Call of Duty Mwf2: Being the terrorist and killing everyone at an airport: It's not real.

Kratos having sex with a woman: It's not real

I don't like when violence is what's used to sell the game. Like the main draw is the blood splurting and the dismemberment. I'm also very squeamish and probably wouldn't play games that take the violence to an extreme.

However, I have no problem with the idea of violence in a game, and it can even be realistic if it's downplayed (like in Age of Empires games).

I'm so angry about this. Furious. Our newspapers are used to providing a one-dimensional story but it's unusual for our TV to do it. I mean, this is usually what happens to them if they try - ridicule.

C&VG actually found out (thanks to contribution from allies on Twitter) that Julie Peasgood had actually contributed voice acting to a survival horror game. Hypocritical, much? Link

Yeah I'm fine with violence in games on a moral level. It does get pretty silly and stupid sometimes on a design point of view, though.

It's clear the guy from the gaming website was there simply to be provoked because they didn't listen to him at all and the audience only clapped when one of the others said something condemning gaming. You could see the exasperation on his face.

I have no problem with violence in video games. It's just a game. It can leave you feeling uneasy, like the airport scene in MW2 which I chose not to play after seeing my brother play it, but it is ultimately a game and not real. Children should not be allowed to play these games on their own. Granted, we bought it for my brother who is turning 16 this May, but he's intelligent enough to know what is real violence and what is simply pixels on a screen.

When I grow up and have kids of my own who are into gaming, I will enforce the ratings system, and only allow the purchase of T/M games once I know that they know the difference. Being a gamer myself, I think I'll be perfectly well equipped and informed to deal with my children playing games. They won't be able to pull one over on their dad because I was their age once and I know what it's like to be in their position.

Who knows, maybe I'll end up being "the coolest dad ever" to them. That or they'll be mad that I'm too busy hogging the Xbox1080.

Man, that guy who actually knew what he was talking about got hosed for it. He put up legitimate arguments, and the other two just kept saying, "I don't support violence of any kind." At least give reasons on why you think the ratings systems don't work or even the Parental Controls on the flippin' consoles. They both work fine and do what they are supposed to do if the parents do what they should.

I think you sumed it up better than I could. Well done.

I had a huge post written up. Decided to delete it all and just say Bitmap summed it up the best.

"It's not real"

Same arguments can be said for violent movies, television, etc.

I'm really against this trying to "protect" our children. When I look at friends whom has had "protective" parents, I see people whom are more ignorant, less intelligent and generally worse off at real life. My parents never tried to hide reality, quite the opposite actually, they let me use a computer with an internet connection(old school dial up was so FTW) pretty much freely since the age of 5 and there was never any restrictions on what films I saw or what games I played.
And I have to say I turned out pretty good. I'll definitely raise my kids in the same spirit.

If a game is fun, I'll play it, regardless of the violence level. None of it fazes me. And parents need to watch what they buy for their kids. But that's just me.

Shhh! Don't you know that logic and responsibility have the same effect on these people that sunlight has on vampires?!

Wait. Keep talking.

Back when I was a kid, my parents insisted on watching me play any game they weren't sure about - which was Goldeneye and Doom 64 at the time. (they allowed me to play them, incidentally, but they still wanted to watch first.)

That's what parents should do.

Little message for these people: You are a parent. It is your responsibility to take care of your kids, and to keep them from seeing things they're not mature enough to handle. It's not our place to raise your kids for you, you'd bitch about it if we did.

Games have ratings. I always thought they were publicized quite well; they're mentioned in any game advertisement (including the ones on TV) and displayed in roughly the same place on damn near every single game box. It's not hard to take a few seconds to keep little Timmy from playing [trope]UltraSuperDeathGoreFestChainsawer3000[/trope].

Personally I don't mind violence in video games as long as it isn't over the top violence
