Beta levels
There are 5 beta levels on the released ROM. Two of them had been Mario vs Luigi levels, as they have multiplayer battle stars.

Beta Music

There's an unused music in the game, which is a different version of the multiplayer theme, slower and with different instruments. It can be heard on this beta video.

You don't access the bottom one, and the top three were leftover levels which Treeki hacked to work properly. Those files actually give us close to how the game originally looked/worked, but we've been too lazy to research it I guess...

Yea, I think it ought to be made clear that the wiki is for what is found unused within the ROM only. While things such as magazine scans and proto-videos are nice, they don't fit the guidelines... :/

Precisely. That has always been TCRF's focus, and I'd like to keep it that way. I believe I've mentioned before that I much prefer cold, hard data to old, blurry screenshots and rampant speculation (and as the old Sonic 2 mockups have shown, how can you even be sure that what you see in a magazine ever really existed in-game?).

That music IS in the released rom. If you edit a level in NSMB Editor and set its music to 0x63, you'll hear exactly that melody. Look at this video of my hack (Hard super dario bros), which features that music:

On the subject of that multiplayer co-op video, there are more stuff left in the ROM that mught be related to it. By using the ? flying block with a certain sprite data, it is possible to spawn a Mario clone, and get two (or more) Mario's on screen, and they interact like they do in the Mario vs Luigi levels and in that beta multiplayer video, except for the fireballs. Throwing fireballs at the other "clone" mario doesn't affect him. Probably because the fireballs know they come from either Mario or Luigi, and in the final multiplayer, your own fireballs don't affect you.
Look at these videos. The first one is showing the ? block on the original levels, and the second one is a level I made where you have to take both Marios to the end. Thread in NSMB Hacking Forum

EDIT: More stuff, now unused graphics, tilesets and BGs

Tilesets


An unused bonus room tileset, which reminds us to the SMW bonus rooms. It features a mini mario door, which can be seen in this beta screenshot






The boss room tilesets also have some blocks that were never used in game: a more colorful version of the tower blocks, and some shiny gray blocks.



Two different versions of the underground tileset: one is darker blue and the other one is yellow.

Backgrounds


There are six unused backgrounds similar to the used bonus room ones, which feature marios, luigis and enemies from SMB NES.

Actually, I am not really sure that the flying ? block which can spawn Mario is an actual unused feature. I'm fairly sure it may just be caused by the game trying to read an entry from a table which doesn't have enough entries and creating a duplicate PLAYER object. (NSMBW contains a sprite which is never used in the game, but directly spawns a duplicate player object. It causes similar glitches.)

Some more info about the unused levels:
- The first three are set up for the multiplayer Mario vs. Luigi mode, the other two are single-player desert levels with a flagpole
- With the final game's "sprite set" data, not all the sprites in these levels can be active at once - many of them will conflict and not appear
- Even when the mappings are fixed, some of the sprites' positioning and settings do not match what the final game expects - the tilting mushrooms in the first level are in the wrong position,
- These levels make use of tilesets which no longer exist: the grassland tileset used to have regular mushrooms tiles (the objects are still there, the graphics are just missing), and the third level contains a bonus area which uses a non-existent tileset

It would be nice if someone could recreate that video at something better than 4 FPS, with somewhat better playing skills. As it is, it's kinda painful to watch, especially right around the middle.

for 255 is 00 00 SS 00 00 W0 change s to the speed that will start hovering, change W to have invisble water at the height of the plants

203 is a purple tilt mushroom that is small and tilts slowly


for 149 (I THINK this is unused) 00 00 10 00 00 00 to make appear a empty koopa shell. if you change the color to blue you can grab the blue shell and carry it around but if you ground pound you will get the powerup like in the beta way of getting this powerup.

Small Pendulum Platform they can be made small which is unused

So I was poking around the insides of NSMB with Treeki's editor, and as I was looking at the tileset used by the first castle level of World 8, I noticed a ton of unused tiles... that Nintendo destroyed instead of deleted


It's the stuff covered in teal X marks... Maybe someone can restore the tiles?

Those destroyed tiles look very similar too some in the beta videos.
This X marking happens in the grassland tileset too on what was probably a mushroom stalk.

There is unused lava in the tower, castle, final castle, and volcano tilesets.
Water too in the main block tileset, and a climbable vine that acts like the vines that comes out of blocks.
These are all fully functional
