I've tried just on the desk (this was worse, there were kinda odd "dead zones" on the desk where the pointer wouldn't move at all) and on a blue mousepad I have, which should have enough texture on it from the fact that it's cloth; this is the one I have it on, now.

My previous mice were mostly annoying. I had a Kensington optical mouse that usually worked OK, but would often try to go to the corners randomly and get stuck. Before that was all ball mice that all died from getting shit stuck in them and me not having a screwdriver to open them up to fix them.

I don't think it's the mouse, you might just have mad jittery hands (this can be easily tested by comparing your hands to an electric toothbrush--or I guess you could try a writing sample at different sensitivities), and even then the g5 series has sensitivity controls on the mouse, so I'm not sure what's the problem. Insane mouse speed is a nerd bragging point, yes, but you might want to tone it down a bit for maximal precision (and work your way up if you really are attached to your high-speed forays into headshots, MS PAINT and whatnot).

If the problem really is with your mouse, then call up customer support, they're pretty good with this sort of thing. But that's not fun at all.

Every Microsoft mouse I've ever owned has developed similar button problems. I think I went through three or four of the stupid things before settling on my current Logitech MX518. I love this mouse and would not trade it for anything.

I have a Dell BT Travel Mouse that came with my laptop. It's small and wireless, very nice, no trouble thus far, even after 1 1/2 years heavy usage.

I have the Steelseries WoW mouse. Shit's fucking fantastic! The only real problem is a software bug that doesn't let you import your Armory data. Big whoop. I got it for $50, about half its retail price. Inside of WoW, it's useful but outside of WoW it has 15 buttons that I can program! :smugdra:

But before this, I went through countless Logitech mice, a Dell mouse and a Microsoft mouse which all fucked up in one way or another. It feels good to finally get something that doesn't completely suck, that's for sure.

There've already been a few...

Anyway. This is my mouse, say hello:

It works just fine, except for the scroll wheel being busted (middle-click works, but not actual scroll).
I wonder if I can fix it...

My Performa 575's mice—both of them, actually—are over 15 years old and still work great... it's a shame they don't make mice like they used to... but then again, Apple products are built to last, generally (my girlfriend has an Apple IIgs from 1988 that still works great today. =D)

They may still work, but I generally prefer optical mice with a scroll wheel.

Then again, it seems to me that Mac mice only have 1 button and no scroll wheel, at least in the old days. That threw me off so much at school. We had Windows 95 at home eventually and I got used to right-clicking for context menus, and then at school I couldn't right-click anymore.

Mac OS 8 and up had control-click for context menus, and you could actually use USB two-button mice on iMac and later, where the right button would map to control-click by default. =D

I've seen some people still rocking the 1st and 2nd gen iPods. They used to build stuff that lasts. Now they're all about bottom dollar to get as many out as they can. In general, they're decent quality.

I forgot to mention earlier that this mouse was the one I bought for my laptop. Its actually a decent size and would work for a desktop, too. And it uses a small USB adapter so its pretty discrete.

Oh I know my hands are jittery/uncoordinated as shit, but that's why I have the weight up all the way and have a sorta grippy mousepad. Anyway, I only have it on medium, but even then I get the jitteryness. Also, they probably won't support me because I use Linux. They'll blame it on drivers or some kind of incompatibility.

I can probably deal with it, it's just not as convenient as it would be if it was working correctly.

Couldn't you filter that stuff out? Ideally your jitters are normally distributed.

Error: CSS failed to load.
The first mouse I had came with my first computer, which was a standard Compaq ball mouse. It worked pretty well until it got dirty, and then all I had to do was take out the ball and clean the little roller things. It plugged into the back of the keyboard, so I never had a problem with the length of the cord. Eventually, however, my sister spilled juice on it (apple, I think). It still worked, but the scroll wheel was hard to turn and click (I think I wiped the greasy stuff off of it when I cleaned the juice out of the inside of the mouse ). That was okay though, because we already had a new computer that came with a new mouse (or we got it shortly after, I forgot). Still a standard Compaq mouse (unfortunately there were no USB ports on the keyboard, so the mouse was a little restricted ). When that got dirty though, there was nothing on the rollers, and I didn't want to keep unscrewing it to clean it, so I just bought a new wireless mouse made by Microsoft (the bottom just says "Wireless Optical Mouse 2.0", but I think the package had the number 3000 or something after that...). It was supposed to work up to six feet away from the receiver, but occasionally it wouldn't work even if it was touching it. Eventually when the batteries died I took the other mouse completely apart and cleaned it, and it worked from then on, but the software of the optical mouse messed with the scrolling so it didn't work very well, so I switched back. I later got a "Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000" (hmm... maybe the other one was 2000?) for my laptop. Even though the range was only three feet, it worked much better (it would even work six feet away if I tilted it up 90 degrees ). Now I have a new wired Dell optical mouse that came with a new computer. I don't have to clean it or replace batteries, but... if I click the right mouse button (as in "right click") in the wrong spot, it "squeaks".

Erm. The iPod?
My first-gen iPod touch is still alive and kicking, despite my friend's 2nd-gen iPod touch dying on him within five months of purchase.

My mom's 5th-gen iPod classic is still running fine too. :3

At least pretty much every computer has USB now, since I remember when there were both serial and PS/2 keyboards and mice being sold, and it was confusing for many people unfamiliar with connectors. There was also 9-pin and 15-pin serial, but the latter was mainly used for gamepads and tablets, IIRC. At least Apple had ADB long before PS/2 ports were standard on IBM compatibles, and now both Macs and PCs use USB. =)

That would be this, although there are 25-pin serial ports. (And 25-pin parallel ports, which can be easy to confuse with 25-pin serial ports.)
