Here is all of the unused info I've gathered from Mario Paint so far.

Rotation Options

In addition to the four flip options for stamps and the copy feature, four rotation options are fully programmed into the game. However, they can only be accessed by setting a certain flag in RAM.

PAR code 7E099F01 enables these options:

90° Counterclockwise
90° Clockwise
90° Counterclockwise + Y-flipped
90° Clockwise + Y-flipped

There may be a button combo which sets this flag, but it hasn't been uncovered yet.

Hidden Button Codes

If a controller is plugged into the second controller port, two button combos can be entered to access functions likely used by the developers to test certain features.

Holding Start, A and B enters the game without having to click on Mario.

Holding Select, A and B simultaneously loads and displays the saved painting and animation and plays the saved music. It appears to be a Save RAM test.

If save data exists, "WAIT.." will appear on the screen for a few seconds while the SRAM contents are being loaded.

"NO SAVE DATA" will appear instead if no saved data exists.

Unused Icon

Stored near the graphics for the coloring book icons are similar graphics for an icon depicting a teddy bear. This may mean there was a fifth coloring book picture at one point.

I can't see why they would remove that rotation feature, as it's clearly pretty darned useful. Maybe they ran into problems with it at the last minute?

Oh! I remember the SRAM test thing. I had the Miracle Piano Teaching System for SNES, and if I plugged the keyboard into port 2 and turned on Mario Paint, it would give me the "WAIT...", and then it would indeed display my animation and start my music simultaneously.

I completely forgot about that.

Heeheehee! I figured out how to enable it without hacking.

On the title screen, left-click the "N" to start the staff roll. When it gets to "PROGRAMMER: NORIAKI TERAMOTO" (the second credit), hold the right button and left-click the "N" again to stop the credits. This will enable the extra features.

In addition to the extra rotation options, you can now right-click anywhere to activate Undodog, right-click to sample colors from the canvas in the stamp editor, or press L+R+Select+Start on controller 2 to reset the game. There are quite a few references to $7E099F in the code, so there might be other hidden features that I've missed. Have fun!

OMFG!!!! I KNEW IT!!

ok, i registered in this forum to say: THANK YOU!

Now an explanation XD:

When I was a kid, I had Mario Paint (back there in 1992) and I really played with it A LOT. One day, while playing, I discovered this arrows options, I was amazed. Of course when I reseted the game, I never saw them again...

When I told everyone about it, nobody believed me. With the years I started believing I dreamed it... and once in a while, I always thought about that...

I searched for it in many game magazines, I even wrote to some of them asking XD

Many years later, I searched for ir in the Internet, and even gamefaqs didn't mention it... I was begining to think I was crazy...

Now, 20 years after!, I read this and... OMFG!

I know you must think I am weird with all this, but I have been looking for this for 20 years!! XD

I guess I can take partial credit for this, so you're welcome, xelloss.

I spent lots of time with Mario Paint as a kid too. It was one of the first two video games I ever played (Super Mario World was the other). Aside from cycling through palettes in the opposite direction, the right mouse button is pretty useless, so it never dawned on me to try things out with it on the title screen.

If you are indeed telling the truth, it is interesting that you found this by accident. The steps needed to access the hidden features are specific enough that it's no wonder it would take nearly two decades for someone to discover them again.

Usually, for old memories people have about weird things in video games, there is either a lack of evidence to back them up, or evidence is eventually found which disproves them.

This case is one exception!

It's always pretty awesome to be able to point and say "see! I wasn't crazy!"

I know! That's why I doubted it so much and I wanted to find some evidence!

About the way I did it... I really don't know, I remember I used to play a lot with the "intro cheats", but don't remember doing the right button thing... perhaps by accident...

Now that I read this post, I am not sure... but I think I remembered that the rotate arrows where not the only change... I don't remember the right button options (as you said I didn't used that button a lot), but perhapas another option... I just don't remember X_x

What really messed with my head in those days was that the flip option was called "flip/ROTATE" and not only "flip". That could not be a coincidence!

Wow. Sorry to resurrect an old post, but I'm another one of those people who ran across this many, many years ago as a child by accident. I noticed that it was possible to rotate the stamps and I thought that was awesome. After resetting the game, the option didn't appear again. I thought there must be some hidden code to activate it but had no idea what it might be. After the rise of the Internet, I searched online a few times but was never able to find it. My memory of this particular incident is clear enough that I was sure I didn't dream it up somehow.

Anyway, today I decided to search again and I finally ran across this thread.

Thanks for figuring this out! Solves a childhood mystery of mine. :-)
