Haha, the library's selling cool shit again.

For one, I guess they had old computer stuff they didn't need anymore and are selling at a ridiculously low price (mice and wires free, for God's sake!). Two, found cassettes of old, but awesome music. Mostly singles from Poison, The Cure, and Live, but there was a compilation from Motley Crue in as well. Also, books. Not the lame 2nd rate shit, but more like recent travel books people can give a shit about.

Nabbed an extension cord for speakers and headphones for my dad, an extra monitor cord, and an old school IBM mouse.

I seriously intend to go back tomorrow with some money and nab some more stuff. This seriously owns.

I once picked up a NES with 3 controllers, all cords, and a Game Genie for $2 at a yard sale. Games $0.5 each. Epic win.

We weren't even testing for that.

I found that super awesome stereo just standing around in the trash.

It was worth 2,000 German Marks in 1980. That's an awful lot. It still works to this date (though the 20 year warranty sadly expired).

Around 2000 when I still collected old computers, we got an old Tandy Color Computer for $2. We didn't have a tape or disk drive for it though, nor did we have cartridge software, so usually it just sat there.

Other than that, I've bought used books online for $0.01, but there's $3.99 shipping added to that.

I got one for free from my uncle, who won it in a contest but had no use for it. It's a first-gen model with the beefy controllers, which will probably make things easier when I get around to modding it.

The DVD drive might be flaky, though, since it locked up a couple of times playing Pac-Man World 2.

Aside from that, uhhhh...I dunno. I got a composite color monitor (AMDEK Color-I, circa 1982) for something like $10 at a thrift store, which served me well as a TV for a number of years. Great picture quality, considering its age (the lack of noisy RF decoding circuitry inside probably helps a lot). I could even watch cable on the thing by hooking up a VCR.

I found a 28 and then later, a 30 inch CRT television off the street.

Both work just fine. We use them as our main TVs now.

My other score actually happened at the same library back in August, where I found 7 or 8 books and only payed about $2.50 for all of them. Half were computer books, like troubleshooting, XP Pro, Windows and MS-DOS manual, and a book on C++ programming. Other half was a Tolstoy book made in the '20's with an old 50's postcard for a local chapter of a club (I think mom took it to the town museum or something), Hemp Manifesto, a book on rabbits and a book on photography.

I am definitely hauling ass to the next major book sale there.

I found $20 bills on 2 separate occasions. One was just lying on the sidewalk when I was on my bike and the other was in the hallway of this apartment building. I also picked up $10 on the street once.

Other than that, usually just coins and $1 bills.

I found my Odyssey2 at an indoor flea market for $25, the purchase of which I attribute to starting my console collection.

My most recent awesome find was a Sega Master System with original TV/Game Switch, AC adapter, and a few games at a Play-N-Trade going out of business sale late last year. I thought it was awesome how I managed to buy it on the last day the store was open (although I had to find a new job, at Staples)... =)

Paulguy's Post configuration
I saw an Amiga 500 at a thrift store once, but I didn't have any money, and it didn't come with any other parts like keyboard/mouse/monitor or any software.

They also had this really neat old VCR. It was absolutely enormous, top loading and had knobs to change the channel, and also wood grain. Worked good, too. I connected it to a similar-era TV and the picture was pretty good. Unfortunately, it only supported the linear audio track, rather than the hi-fi track, so audio was poor.

Anya's old PS1. Not for free but still. More old-school than you.

Oh! That reminds me, I DID get a brand-new Master System at a local toy/hobby/hunting goods store a few years ago, when they were clearing out all their old video game stock, for something like $20. It was on display for a very long time (it's probably the same one that caught my eye as a kid), and one corner of the box is covered in permanent marker (the store doesn't use price tags ), but the system itself and all the accessories are absolutely pristine. Maybe some day in the future I'll be able to sell it and retire comfortably.

I also have quite a few boxed games, some still shrinkwrapped (including the Legend of Zelda re-release). Probably the most interesting of the bunch is a boxed copy of Lolo 2, in near-mint condition, that still has the original receipt (circa 1992) inside. I thought that was kinda neat.

My old high school throws their old servers my way when they upgrade them to new boxes or are just getting rid of them. Got another one from a different school as well, though I took out the original components and put my desktop into it. Extra space ftw.

I should really go and spend the $50 on another copy of Metroid Prime Trilogy. They stopped production back in January, the Collector's Edition could fetch a pretty penny in a few years.
