Finally. I hope this story will catch on. A true fatwa by a real Islamic scholar. I hope that this will lead to the reestablishment of an extensive, academically supported Sharia system. A lot of the problems today in Arab and Islamic countries is that the comprehensive law system built up over a millenium ago has been abandoned. Many mujtahids(graduates of Sharia law school) from prominent law schools in places like Egypt and Pakistan are cab drivers in those countries. Often times, in Egypt especially, the lawmakers who actually have power are those who side with the political party in power. And in recent times, with the influence of Wahhabi Islam, this had led to irrationally strict governments. It's a shame that Islamic legal systems were more liberal in the 1400s. It was supposed to be a system that allowed for innovation and interpretation, fostering knowledge and acceptance of others. Now it's just a way to control the masses to follow the leader. |
