He's never been online before, I'd guess, provided his ISP is AOL. It's not bad to get started with, but you clearly see that you need more soon.

Otherwise, I'd guess AOL makes a pretty decent web portal/home page. I've seen my mom on it and it doesn't look TOO godawful.

Stability depends on where you are / line quality, honestly. AOL used to have legendary stability for me at one point, but around 2008 it took a nosedive.

I actually overthought this post help.

I never used AOL and I remember a lot of people saying that AOL sucks even back in 2002 when I was a n00b. I was even squeamish about AIM at first because it's AOL Instant Messenger.

I temporarily had AT&T dialup while I was waiting for DSL to reach my area (I eventually gave up and went with Comcast cable), and they seemed to try to go the AOL route with a custom browser and such. And when you close the browser, it automatically disconnected you from the Internet entirely.

From 1998 to 2002, I used FairPoint dialup, and it was all I had until I finally started college in 2002... it was replaced with Road Runner by the time I moved back in with my parents, and when I moved out on my own, I got Verizon dialup... which was later replaced with Verizon DSL and eventually Road Runner again. Road Runner, at least for me, has always been reliable, except for that faulty modem they sent me when I moved here. =/

I got aol sometime in 97 or 98. It was on a 386sx so I think the computer was more limiting at the time.

Had that for a few years... Probably switched in 2000 or 2001 to some local ISP. Then had peoplepc for 3 years (exactly) then netzero. Finally, verizon dsl until now. I also get AT&T 3G on my phone.

No, I visited the campus a while back and played around online on a laptop, it was better than Charter back home!

If I could afford to live in Portland I would be there in a heartbeat, but fear of not obtaining a job would prevent me from even trying to go there.
