Does anyone have any recommendations for video editing software? I'm looking at getting Pinnacle studio HD ($50 USD) to use for a digital media class since I've used that before (high school). Before I do though, does anyone have a suggestion for something better? I'm on a Vista system using Firewire to connect to the camera, if that makes a difference >>

Sony Vegas is presumably a respectable editor. It's supposed to have a pretty good learning curve. Someone asked about this before but I can't find the thread for some reason.

There's Movie Studio which is kind of the consumer version, and then there's the prosumer Movie Studio HD, and then there's Pro.

Sony Vegas is really good. It's what I use now; it's better than Camtasia Studio by leaps and bounds.

Plus, if you really wanted to, you could use Vegas for audio as well.

That would be me

Yeah Sony Vegas saved my ass. It's easy to learn, offers non-linear editing, runs on vista/7, and isn't a resource hog. Seriously, when I was running an extremely bloated copy of XP in desperate need of a wipe, when all other programs refused to run, Sony Vegas got the job done! Plus i learned everything I needed to know for my project in a few hours, having previously only used windows movie maker. This was crucial since I had to get a project done the next day.

I've been using AVISynth. It's not at all what you're looking for, but if you really really want to know how screwed up video technology is, that's where to look.

Speaking of technology gone bad, you mention that your camera connects using Firewire. Is it a DV camera?

Adobe Premiere CS2 is a very good video editor. Of course, it's adobe so it costs an arm and a leg. But it works really well, and has little learning curve.

Yeah. Also, I can't really get Vegas since I'm looking for something cheap, I'm basically broke as it is :/

Windows Movie Maker!

Yeah, except that's like editing by hooking two VCRs together.

Aside from that, I hear Final Cut is orgasmic on the Mac, but of course it's Mac, so not only does the Mac cost a fortune, so does the software.

Adobe Premiere is what I'm used to, but that costs a lot of money.

Ehh, I wonder if VirtualDub could do any editing... I mean, it's a "virtual" "dub", and that's what dubs are for, and it's supposedly free.

And can't, IIRC, read DV from a camcorder via IEEE 1394.

Yes it can. (Not that there aren't several better alternatives.)

There are some definite disadvantages to using DV, but the only one you'll ever really notice is the interlacing. If your camera has a non-interlaced recording mode, you will save yourself a lot of trouble by using it.

I could go on and on about this kind of stuff, but I won't.

VCRs that catch fire when you press a button.

We have one of those!

Except that it doesn't actually catch fire, it's just missing the faceplate so we have to press the actual on-PCB buttons instead.

The power button on my JVC VCR imploded, flying inside the VCR and never coming out.

The VCR still works, but turning it on and off requires the remote. :specialed:

But I don't know how to use it :V

I hear Sony Vegas is good though.
