bliggity blag post here. This one caught me by surprised and now I'm wondering what on earth HTC might very well be sued on.

Surely it can't be multitouch , since if it WAS that they'd be right on Palm's ass by now.

I wonder if this is just Jobs' way of sending a warning to Google indirectly. Though it looks just like a lawsuit where they toss a bunch of random patents (none of which are multitouch-related, interestingly) at the opposition and see if any of them have any impact. However, I'd have to say pretty confidently that Apple is no stranger to this kind of lawsuit, especially after the whole Psystar business; they wouldn't have done this unless they knew they had a good chance of winning. This must also mean that whatever negotiations between Apple and HTC have fallen through.

Of course, it COULD be just a money grab, in which case Apple and Jobs will end up looking like greedy, anti-competitive bastards. If so, then that's Apple running like a regular corporation would, which would be unusual in the extreme. They do things rather differently in Cupertino and it makes a lot of money. But it could also be the first of MANY lawsuits -- after the iPhone came out, many phones suddenly emerged to have iPhone-like features. I'd hate to see the iPhone as the only phone on the market though. It's a good pocket computer but as a phone it leaves something to be desired.

One amazing thing about this is the amount of bile and venom coming from both Apple fanboys and anti-Apple trolls elsewhere, like over on CNET (which has never been exactly the best tech news place anyway.)

Apple's always been a hot topic but ... I've never seen the trolling get THIS bad on CNET in all the time I've been on the internet. They'll probably have cleaned up or disabled the comments by the time this is posted though (I had to leave for half an hour in the middle of typing this post up.) It would have been almost amusing, had it not been for the sheer amounts of ignorance there. The engadget posts don't appear to be tons better, but ... they aren't anywhere near as bad. It's amazing. If this was real life, people would just be sitting there with their differing opinion and hardly anyone would speak up. It's amazing how anonymity turns regular people into colossal douchebags.

Pretty much. Clearly they're scared of another company besting them

Just shows how broken the patenting system is.

Some patents are ridiculous... but hey, at least they can't be renewed. Software patents are especially troublesome, like with GIF and MP3 and open-source software... but GIF expired in 2004 and MP3 should be expiring soon anyway, so... =/

We should all start making patents on breathing, hairstyles, and the rest of the DNA.

And then sue everybody for existing.

I have patented the letter e. Anyone using this letter must pay me royalties for each use of said letter.

I think copyrights are more ridiculous. The original term of a US copyright was 14 years. If you ask me, that's plenty long.

Copyrights REALLY should only last a year.

If you have an idea and you want to keep it, renew it. Not that hard. =/

I should just try to patent the act of filing a patent. >.>

The system is so horribly broken primarily because none of the rules actually need to be followed. You don't have to have invented it, you don't have to be the first, you don't have to use it at all, it can even be a vague blanket concept. Anyone can patent anything with enough lawyers.

Funny thing is, very few patents even seem to have any effect. For minor things you sometimes see them actually enforced; for example Nintendo apparently patented the shape of its D-pads (really, what?) which is why other systems all have different shapes, and iPod is the only thing I've seen with that clickwheel. But when it's something big like a major technology or general concept, you still see it used everywhere. They all find ways around it. Or are they all actually paying license fees and royalties for damn near everything now? I sure hope not. <.<

Copyright is also broken, for similar reasons. Nobody has to actually follow the rules.

FYI, that patent image you pasted is for the iPhone lighting up the screen when you move it away from your face while calling. It has nothing to do with putting a phone in your pocket.

Anyway, in before Prior Art beats Apple to a bloody pulp. Most of these are frivolous at best.

Unless the holder actually cares enough to keep a lookout, and then cares enough to act on an offender.
