((Just an FYI, I did this month's winner a bit different. I think it came out better this way.))

Anya: Congrats on being Jul's MotM for March! Lets start with a few of the usual questions: What brought you to Jul?

Terra: Do you mean when I returned in September of 2009 or when I first joined Acmlm's Board?

Anya: Both, actually.

Terra: OK. Basically, I grew up with the NES and, especially, the game Super Mario Bros. Not satisfied with the game's 32 built-in levels, I would design countless levels of my own and draw them on paper as a child. Nothing much came of this again until 2001, when I was browsing a Web site called TMK (The Mushroom Kingdom) and noticed that they had Mario level editors for download. That got me into the world of emulation and ROMs and in a Google search I found something called "Strange Mario Bros.". I was intrigued, having used the Game Genie to get odd underwater worlds and such in SMB1, so I checked it out. It was Acmlm's hack, of course, and I downloaded everything I needed to play it and make my own hacks. Several months later, I started joining message boards. I checked Acmlm's ROM Hack Domain one day in early 2002 and found out that he had a board too. I lurked for a while and looked up ROM hacking information, then registered my own account to ask ROM hacking questions at first. From there, I started posting more in the general fora and such too. I always loved the AcmlmBoard system for its unique features.

Over time, however, I began to drift away from the community because of drama and trouble with various members of I2, primarily Valcion, who was an admin for much of that era and frequently trolled me. In 2005 I left Acmlm's, never planning to return. I returned briefly in 2007 but again got caught in various drama on the board and left again. Then, many years later, I realized that I really missed the people and community of Acmlm's back in its glory days. I would relive old memories in the archives and checked out board2, but they place had changed a lot so I decided to check out Jul. I was going to wait until after I moved out of Michigan to join, in order to avoid much suspicion, but I soon decided that I really wanted to come back home to the community I essentially grew up with.

Anya: That's very sweet of you. So you feel like Acmlm's/Jul is a second home?

Terra: Actually, I feel like it's my first home! I mostly grew up in a rural part of Michigan mostly populated by, shall we say, rednecks. We didn't farm and I wasn't interested in hunting or four-wheelers like a lot of people at school. Acmlm's was my place to talk to fellow nerds. Also, I find that I can more easily be myself online, and I don't have to worry about money and transportation. Really, the Julers are the best friends I've got.

Anya: Do you think if the people of Jul all lived in the same area, would we get along as much as we do online? Or do you think it's a better relationship since it is over the web?

Terra: Well, if we lived in the same area, one of us would be upset over the weather, to be sure I like the fact that Jul is online. We have people from different areas, countries, and cultures. That was always one thing I liked about online communities.

Anya: Why did you choose the username Terra?

Terra: OK, back in 2008 one of my friends (known as Schala at Jul) was a big fan of the Final Fantasy series, and I was not familiar with it at the time. She sent me a ROM of Final Fantasy VI and I tried it out. I immediately began to identify with the cute green-haired girl with the magical powers. She became not only my favourite FF6 character, but also my favourite video game character of all time. When I joined Jul, it was time to pick a username. I would have gone with Taryn, my first name, but I didn't want people to confuse me with ChibiTaryn/Tarale, so I used Terra instead because of the FF6 character Terra Branford.

Anya: If you could change something about FFVI, would you? And if so, what would it be?

Terra: I'd make Terra's hair always green and not blonde sometimes Other than that, I'd make it longer adding more dungeons and such, like what they did with FF6 Advance. Oh, and another thing: (you may want to put that in spoiler tags in the post)

Anya: There's talk on who's Terra's love intrest is in FFVI, who do you think it is?

Terra: Well, as a lesbian I don't usually care for heterosexual love pairings, and Celes is taken and Relm is too young. I'd say Terra isn't really interested in sexual love but would like to be a mother and raise children, like she does in Mobliz.

Anya: Do you feel that LGBT indiviuals are underrepresented in video games? What would you do to try to change that. What type of game would you create?

Terra: Yes. I am a lesbian and I often identify with a major female character in a video game and get annoyed when, very often, said character is hooked up with a male character in the game. I'm not sure what I would do to change it, but I notice that it seems more a problem with female characters. Not all male characters are given a relationship in games like RPGs, but often most or all of the eligible females seem to be, and always with men.

Anya: In Mass Effect (1 & 2) you are allowed to create your own character. Being female, I always pick that sex. In those two games, as well as Dragon Age, you are able to start and grow into a relationship with another female. Also, in Dragon Age, a man is able to get with another man. Both games are made by Bioware, so it seems one company is changing. Do you think it's better to have a game where you can create your own character and have him/her follow their own path?

Terra: I like that idea. Most of the games I play are from the 16-bit era and earlier though, so I'm not too familiar with changing trends in gaming. Just make sure that being homosexual in the game is just as easy as being heterosexual. Don't hide the "gay option" to appease the religious groups and whatnot.

Anya: Do you think the times are changing where people are more accepting of LGBT or do you think it's going to take more time, lets say past generations dying off and proper education with newer generations?

Terra: I think people are being more accepting in some areas. However, I live just outside of Detroit where calling people "faggot" and "gay" as generic insults is still very popular and accepted and most LGBT individuals must remain closeted in real life or, in some cases, risk being murdered. I imagine that more liberal cities like Paris or San Francisco are very different even now. I had a much easier time on my trip to Seattle than I do here. I think that in time things will change, however. I hope that someday we can have same-sex marriages in every US state, but that might not come for a long time.

Anya: Besides visiting Jul, what do you like to do in your spare time?

Terra: I lead a boring life. Often I browse the Internet or play video games. When the weather is warm, I like to ride my bicycle.

Anya: For the few who might not know, how did your journey into video games begin?
Terra: Both of my parents had game systems before they had me. My mother had an Odyssey² and my father had an Intellivision, an Atari 2600, and a Commodore 64. When I was very young, my parents got an NES. I basically always grew up around video games. My mom used one on the Commodore 64 called Letter Go Round to teach me the alphabet, and we had a few more educational games like that, but I also enjoyed stuff like Centipede, Qix, and of course Super Mario Bros. As time went on, we got more games for the NES and PC, but my parents refused to upgrade to the SNES or Genesis, so I was still playing 8-bit games until we finally got a used SNES around 2000.

Anya: Would you like to presue a career in video games (but who doesn't)?

Terra: I'd consider it. Seattle, where I want to live, is close to Nintendo of America I'm not good with graphics though, so it would have to be something like level design, programming, or testing.

Anya: Going to try something new with MotM. Short answers. Pretty simple. Hmmm, first MotM done on AIM and now this. You don't mind, right?

Terra: It's OK.

Anya: Hot or cold?

Terra: Cold, usually.

Anya: Retro or new video games...and why (okay, maybe this won't be short).

Terra: Retro because I grew up with them and I'm used to them. Also, I like the old-fashioned emphasis on gameplay over graphics. I like a few new games.

Anya: Favorite food?

Terra: I eat horribly. I don't like talking about food

Terra: As a kid I always liked French fries though.

Anya: Color or Colour?

Terra: Colour. Maybe I should explain why I use British spellings. I've always lived in the USA except for 4 or so months in Germany in 2008, but I spell words like litre and defence. Basically, I'm extremely left-wing politically and I got fed up with George W. Bush, so around 2006 I stopped spelling a lot of words in the American way and adopted British and Canadian spellings. Now, it's more that I like the British spellings better, although my vocabulary is usually more American (I say elevator and not lift, apartment and not flat...).
Anya: Favorite colour?

Terra: Purple, pink, and green. I can't really decide between the 3.

Anya: Favorite animal that you can't have a pet and favorite animal that you could have as a pet.

Terra: Favourite pet would be a kitty! I think everyone knows I like cats though. Favourite non-pet would probably be a frog or squirrel.

Anya: Favorite anime, TV, movie and video game?

Terra: Hmmm, I almost never watch TV or movies. I like the original Star Wars trilogy though. I have too many favourite video games. Some of them are Super Mario Bros. 3, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Final Fantasy VI, and SimCity 2000 and 3000.

Anya: Favoirte band (I think I know what you're going to say here...and if I'm right, I'm listening to them right now)?

Terra: You're thinking of the Beatles, right? Again I have a lot of favourites, but they're definitely up there.

Anya: Yep. Do you think music has gone down hill over the years?

Terra: Yes. I listen to almost no music from the 2000s these days. I'm not interested in modern ghetto hip-hop or this Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift stuff. I think that a lot of newer singers have very little talent and all get famous from variations of the same boring appearance. I also don't like how singers, especially in the area of rap but also invading R&B, think they need to swear a lot and be very sexually explicit to sell CDs.

Anya: I think that's about it. Is there anything you would like to add?

Terra: I pronounce Acmlm as ack-mulm Back in the old days, "Where does your username come from?" and "How do you pronounce Acmlm?" often went hand-in-hand, and you already asked me the former.

Anya: Haha. Once again I would like to congratulate you for being Jul's MotM for March.

Terra: Thank you. I feel honoured (with a u)

Congrats on MotM Terra!

Just a quick question type thing, but I always wondered, if you had to get a new username, what would it be?

If Terra is taken, I usually use Terra1041, which is just Terra with my Jul ID appended. Other than that, probably Taryn, which is my first name, or something off-the-wall like "Squid Squisher".

Congratulations Terra! The first paragraph in your reply sounds a lot like me (drawing levels on paper and wanting to design your own levels). The only big difference is that I skipped TMK and found Acmlm's site first .

Almost read that as shitpick.

Kinda like a toothpick, but instead of picking teeth clean, it picks shit clean. Which... isn't even possible.

Interesting note about the British spellings.

For whatever reason, I am compelled to use the British spelling half of the time, because it feels like the words are being unnecessarily shortened half of the time in American English.

I think that in most cases, the British spellings are the originals and they were simplified by Webster and others in the USA.

I like the name "zed" for Z too, but I'm so used to saying "zee" and I figure people wouldn't know what a zed is around here.

I know what Zed is, but only due to watching Star Gate: Atlantis.

I dislike the additional us, but the double ls and things like judgement just make more sense to me. They probably did just shorten it for American English, but I wonder why...

My 1st grade teacher was Canadian. Well, 1 of them (they switched teachers in December). She pointed out that Z can be zee or zed.

I like the u's, but I don't like the o's in words like manoeuvre and foetus, so I tend to use the US spellings for those words.

Ah, yeah. Those os are just weird. I use American spellings when it removes us and os, but not when it eliminates double ls or es from things.

Congrats, Terra.

They do say zed-p-m in there --
And I never would have never noticed it either hadn't you said that.

And congrats on the MotM Terra, that too.

Thanks. I might do them all like this from now on.

I don't know why, but I think it came out a bit better than just back and forth PMs.

Of course there is a chance of going off topic while talking on AIM.
