Each end og the pipe need a Entrance. Both must have same Connected pipe ID.
Set area 0 in one end and area 1 in the other end.
Make a Path with the same ID as the entrance's "Connected Pipe ID"
Each node on the path must be placed and unknown 6 in the node numbered as below: (Not sure if the node placement is that strict but it works for me).
0 = If pipe entrance is in buttom. (node in right side, just below the pipe, hold shift to adjust the node).
1 = If pipe entrance is to the right. (node just below pipe exit, hold shift to adjust the node).
2 = If pipe entrance is the top. (node 3 block size below pipe exit, inside pipe to the right, hold shift to adjust the node).
3 = If pipe entrance is to the left. (node 1 block size inside pipe exit, below pipe, hold shift to adjust the node).
Image of how I place the node in each pipe:
The path must be connected from one end of the pipe to the other this is just to show the placement.
You can place more nodes on the path if you need, only the first and last need the above unknown 6 number.
World 7-A area 2 is good for more insight information.

Strange...
I just experimented to make two doors as connected pipe. (to make a elevator).
- Now for the strange part - I entered the door in W1-3 and went to W1-1. |

That would be amazing if you can figure out how to control that! One idea I've had for a long time for a Mario hack would be to make sort of a metroidvania level design (obviously without the powerup keylock idea).. this hack idea would probably work better in SMW tho..
I have tried to mess with the numbers but it seems to be random.
Also I only go to W1-1 if both start and midway entrance is set to the same ID and the midway entrance is near the door,
I have tried to move the midway to the start but the it does not work. (the door take you the a pipe exit near the midway point).
Trying to adjust, same setting for door and path - just moved the door and path. Now I go to W1-2 area 2... |
