Hilo hopes damage not as bad as 1960 tsunami

And just several minutes ago there was a tsunami on the coast of New Zealand, which means that the actual tsunami for Hawaii might not come until about 3 more hours.

Hawaii's been hit now. Tsunami is supposed to hit around here within a couple hours, though it should be less than half a meter tall.

The warning has been lifted off of Hawaii, though waves are still coming in.

Major concern is now focused on Chile's earthquake, which created the Hawaiian tsunami.

Saw about this last night.

Hope it hasn't damaged Chile as badly as that Haitian one hit Haiti.

So far it doesn't look like it. Chile seems to be doing well and AFAIK hasn't asked for extensive help yet.

The waves hitting Aus are supposed to be pretty small too, though I haven't heard any updates on that. I'm inland a fair way so it's not a huge concern personally, though I do have some family nearer to the coasts.

I watched this on the news yesterday up until the second wave hit. I'm glad it wasn't anything major.

I was watching as well, but the camera's weren't too clear. I didn't see anything other than a lot of foam in the ocean when the first one hit. Does anyone know of a clearer video?

Yeah, seems like the waves kinda lost their steam in the ocean.

And Chile seems to have been infinitely more prepared than Haiti; sub-1000 deaths despite a far worse earthquake.

Chile as a nation is also in a better economic situation than Haiti, IIRC.

Yeah, judging from the pictures, they were far more developed than Haiti; thus, better building codes, safety warnings, etc.

Too bad Haiti never got anything like that. A lot of people's lives could have been saved.
