So there's a con that my Science Fiction Fantasy Guild holds every year called MadiCon and after hearing that we need more panels and stuff on the show floor, my girlfriend decided that as a physic major, she wanted to run a panel on how wrong and impossible physics in video games can be. And she's got plenty of experience with explaining why they are wrong, I get to hear it on a regular basis as I play games with her around.

She has a fair number of ideas already, but being the good boyfriend I told her I'd ask for more ideas from the board. She knows about the board and you guys and was really excited when I told her I'd ask you all so if you have any physics impossibilities that she can talk about (I know there are thousands) list them off. We'd both be really grateful.

Oh and if anyone wants info about the convention, let me know, I can supply that too.

Breasts. Breast physics are usually wrong.

Oh, and ever play a GTA game before GTA4? 3, Vice City, San Andreas, all have terrible driving physics.

I'll think up more at school.

What about very large or small versions of characters or enemies, violating the [trope]SquareCubeLaw[/trope]?

Also, changing jump trajectories in midair, and carrying huge amounts of objects, especially in games like FF6 where all of your characters share 1 inventory even when they're in different parts of the map. It's like Terra picks up a potion from one battle, then it teleports to Sabin to use in another? WTF?

This is an incredible first post and I applaud you

I think everything in Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes gives a big "FUCK YOU" to physics. I mean, almost all of the cut scenes in that game are ridiculous.

Could do that with SMW or NSMBWii. If he's 5'6" and two tiles tall when Big Mario, and can jump 4 blocks standing, 5 blocks running, he's jumping like, 11-14 feet into the air every time.

:damn:

How about Zero's / Ninja Kirby's / etc. ability to triangle-jump up walls?

As Terra mentioned before, Hammerspace. The Ultima series both sharply averts it and creates more craziness out of it, especially Ultima 7, where you can hold more items simply by ripping the ship's hold off of a ship. (Yes that's right).

Chrono Trigger, despite exploring the fourth dimension (would that make this game 3D?), carries a lot of fridge logic, some of it actually addressed in the sequel (not all of it). all of this pales, however, next to the fact that there's a waterfall in the floating Zeal islands that has no bottom to it on the overworld map, anywhere.

But two big things that videogames and movies almost always forget about, both start with the letter "L". Lasers and Lava.

Peardian addressed this once accidentally, but lasers are not bullets made of glow. In games, its just easier to present them as a long projectile or something, maybe a piercing shot. that doesn't excuse them though. (And how the heck does the Cyclone/Corkscrew/Meteo laser work in Gradius, anyway? Twisting the beam like that)

Lava on the other hand, is something not a lot of people think about. In a typical convection oven, there are conductive bars which glow when heated, also heating the hair in the contained space. Most ovens can go up to at LEAST 700 degrees. Imagine a rock doing the same thing as those bars, and liquid. It might not take as much to liquify them, but still, to also get them glowing like that? Just being near the lava could cause you to burst into flames. Metroid nicely works around this (most of the time), by making it dangerous to even be in the same room as Lava unless you have Varia suit, though they aren't so nice with energy "beams".

Hey guys. This is FP's girlfriend.
I just wanted to thank you for all your input/ help. These are all really good! Especially because the ideas I came up with involved a little bit too much technical stuff (like adiabatic compressions and terminal velocity and such)... probably not good for a general audience.
Oh! And if you happen to have pictures/ video of bad game physics, could you pass them along to FP? It would be helpful.
Thanks! ^.^

Example. Also, Big Rigs. But the former at least makes the game hilarious. Then there's Cel Damage, which has very cartoony physics, but the characters are generally stereotypical cartoon characters in a cartoon universe.
