This is one extremely fucking aggravating issue I've been having lately. It's not ridiculously common, but it isn't exactly uncommon either. I never had these issues under Windows XP or Vista, only 7 (32-bit).

Apparently, my laptop AND netbook both seem to have their wireless die and the sound go crackly and slow at random intervals. (This only happened for the first time on the netbook last night. My laptop gets this issue more often.) Restarting does not fix this issue, and the wireless stays disabled when booting into Linux even. Turning the machines completely off and back on will fix it.

I'm extremely puzzled as to why this happens. It's a quite massive annoyance, really... mostly because I don't even know the cause. Apparently a few people have had audiodg.exe troubles which result in bad sound, but it's more the wireless dying that concerns me and leads me to believe it's something else. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

A loose connection which is melted when it gets really hot and disables the device.

Restarting allows a short moment for it to solidify and then be re-detected by the BIOS.

Either that or a short circuit which does effectively the same thing, as the BIOS has to re-detect the device for it to work again.

Sounds like something seriously loopy with the hardware.

My mom's laptop got also the crackling sound. I believe it's caused by the earphone plug, which has a connection to detect whether earphones are plugged in or not, and mutes the speakers. I think that connection is loose because plugging in/off an earphone connection fixes/unfixes that randomly...

In your case, if the wireless and sound issues happen always at the same time it will probably be another thing...

I probably misworded the sound, actually. It's more slowed down, as if trying to emulate something on a machine that's not strong enough to handle it. (Try emulating Turrican 3 on PSPUAE or something, if you can. It's something like that.)

I've actually considered reverting to XP (maybe Vista on the laptop) because of all of this. It honestly seems like a good idea, since the issues never arose then. I'm just hoping there's a fix for this first...

Well, if it's a slowdown noise, then the driver's probably too inefficient for the thing to handle.

Probably needs some sort of software work, then.

Yeah. I agree...
If you don't want to reinstall to see if it's a software problem, you could try booting from a Linux live CD (I recommend Ubuntu) and see if the sound and wireless work properly...

Hm, on further thought, it must be some pretty bad software, to knock the hardware offline entirely... maybe it's some botched power management thing in the driver?

Or have you made sure the machine isn't hibernating/lowering power at the same time this is happening?

I'm pretty sure they're not hibernating when this happens. Lowering power, I'd have to check up on, however.

Sound and wireless all work flawlessly in Ubuntu. I wouldn't mind running it as my primary OS on the laptop, but battery life on it is awful compared to on WIndows (which isn't even that fantastic anymore).

Well... If everything works perfectly on Linux then you have a driver problem... Try going to the web of your laptop's manufacturer and download and install latest drivers. That should fix it.
