I really ... had reservations about making a thread about this at all, since ... it's just a layout. Doesn't exactly feel thread-worthy to me, I suppose. :/

I'm no CSS wizard or anything. I had a hell of a time getting the links to work properly without accidentally the whole page because I'm an idiot, but thankfully hydra pointed out what I was doing wrong.

The fonts used are Myriad Pro, Lucida Grande, Lucida Sans Unicode, or Tahoma. It looks best in Myriad Pro but doesn't look bad at all in the others, except maybe Tahoma. You'll probably only have Myriad Pro if you also have some Adobe product like Photoshop installed, so I expect most people will see it in Lucida Sans Unicode or Lucida Grande (which are 99% the same font anyway so maybe Lucida Grande being in the code isn't really necessary.)

Also ... web 2.0 gloss whoo yeah party. But then it just fades to black and probably looks terrible if I make a longer post.

Mainly I'm just curious if it's hard to read or something. It looks like this for me.

Add "-webkit-border-radius: 6px;" to the CSS for that <td> to get it to look like that in Chrome

Ah, yes. I knew I'd forgotten to do something.

Should look fine now.

I catered the glossy background image to match up with the vertical height of what most of my posts appear to be. I think I got it pretty close but not perfect. I think ... for this post, for example, it'd need one or two more lines. Maybe. I dunno.

Only thing I can really think of is, as BMF said, the text could be a touch larger.

Otherwise, it's pretty nice.

Bumped it up to 13.75 (from 13.) How is that?

It looks a bit better on my end, too.

Lain's post №642

Hmm.... it still seems small.

Then again, I'm reading this all on a 22" 1080p TV so that's just me.

Added some needless eye candy. If you are running a browser with Gecko 1.9.3 (currently in alpha so I don't expect this) or anything based on a recent version of WebKit (Safari 4.0.4 or Chrome for example) there should be smooth animations when hovering over links. The shadow animates in one second and the text changes color over three.

This is a quote test. Lorem ipsum etc. Lalalalalala. I wish more browsers supported color specification in the form of #rrggbbaa because having to expand it to rgba(r,g,b,a) is a little cumbersome. At any rate this quote thing is translucent. I'm on a horse.

I am pretty excited over some of the neat stuff that is already implemented, despite CSS3 not being even close to complete.

Impressive, pretty, and fun to look at.

It still looks pretty good even in browsers that don't fully support the CSS for it.

It still seems a bit small and hard to read for me. I'm reading it in Mryiad Pro at 1440x900 in Opera. I think its because the text is always bold. It just feels too thick for me. This, and the kerning seems too close together. Maybe you can remove the bold, and increase the font a little to compensate for readability? Other than that though, great job.

It's bold?

*checks post in Opera*

Other than the rounded corners not working or the animations, it looks fine and readable to me in both Opera 10.10, and in the 10.5 alpha (there's no Mac beta yet.) However the rest of jul seems to have a lot of REALLY tiny text in Opera.

I haven't specified any font-weight or anything anywhere so it should be using the font weight specified in the jul stylesheet. It could just be the way you have your font settings configured. The kerning is a little condensed in Myriad Pro already, I suppose. It's better when the font size is a little larger I guess.

However I'll bump the size up to 14 anyway ... also since the links were getting a little hard to read, I changed them purple.

It seems like Safari 4.0.4 (OS X) animates things, apparently.

Looks fine in Firefox (Windows / Linux) and Camino, though.

Apparently at the time of posting, it seems to be using Helvetica in your profile.

Very nice layout. I like the gradient-thingy in the background of your post too. The link decorations are just epic. Great work, and it's easy to read in my opinion.

Ok, bumping it up to 14 solved the problem for me.

As for the bold, looking back, i guess it was just the links that stuck out to me. This is probably just due to the eye candy you added not being rendered properly in my browser or something, and is no big deal. The text is fine now.

Funny, mine is like a ghetto old-school trick thing as opposed to RGBA.

In any case, it looks fine in my browser, but my Firefox 3.6 just doesn't show the animations, unfortunately.
