Kas,

GTK has been ported to OS X natively now. As far as I know newer versions of GIMP have no X11 requirement.

Paulguy's Post configuration
The brushes are kinda funky and weak in the GIMP. For the simple shape brushes, like circle and square, you can select a scale factor and it'll be properly scaled (it's an option separate from the initial size). I figure the whole brushes thing will be dealt with eventually, as far as having some base shapes (circle, line, N-sided regular polygon) and parameters for each like photoshop, and complex raster brushes being separate. I don't think the GIMP even has much to specify the hardness of a brush at the moment other than "fully hard" and "fully soft".

I seem to recall using variable brush hardness at one point. Just setting it manually and drawing with a mouse. No sense buying a tablet when I can't draw worth a damn.

The multi-desktop addon for Windows isn't even that bad, it just pales in comparison to Compiz's version. If you often lack screen space, it's worth using such an add-on on any OS.
