[MMOUT] Poll: Should I make my nephew play Zelda 1

<Terra> I suck at most games, so I do anything to make them easier
<itsblah> and everyone being used to the super enemies in ZC and whatnot
<Terra> I'm not for challenge quests, usually
<Lunamon> MM: yes
[MMOUT] He is 12 (or 11) years of age and sucks at SMB3
<_4matsy> I couldn't imagine going into level 6 with anything less than full equipment up to that point @_@
<Terra> everyone should play Zelda 1
<RedSnifit> Start him out on LttP
<itsblah> i wish i could get my 10 year old brother into more zelda
<itsblah> but he's too into final fantasy right now
<Lunamon> I played zelda 1 after OoT (lttp was my first zelda)
<Lunamon> and I sucked at it
[MMOUT] to the point where in a 2P game he never beat a level except for one Hammer Bro. I did all the work up to Bowser
<Lunamon> zelda 1 have it's flaws in balance
<_4matsy> I tried a 3 heart wooden sword run once. Level 6 was as far as I got. -_-
<Lunamon> dungeons 1-2 are both easy
[MMOUT] Hell, the only game he's beat so far is Kingdom Hearts 2.
[MMOUT] EVER
<Lunamon> level 3 stabs you with darknuts but are still not to hard
<Lunamon> but
[MMOUT] Ever ever ever ever ever
<Terra> I tried a swordless run and couldn't beat the darknuts in level 3
<Lunamon> level 4 and 5 are just, arg
<Lunamon> and level 6 is just hell
<Girlydragon> Kingdom Hearts 2 is piss easy
<Girlydragon> and bad
[MMOUT] Why does he game so badly
[MMOUT] Oh it's not a 'bad' game, it's just low difficulty.
<Terra> I game horribly, I just have a lot of practice with some games (like SMB2J)
<RedSnifit> No motivation
<Girlydragon> it's a bad 'game'
<Girlydragon> but a good movie
<_4matsy> smb2j is awesome
<Tanks> http://trunksandsoto.com/etc/punchitup.jpg
<Girlydragon> the whole game was "MASH X X X X X X "
<Tanks> awesome XDDD
<Girlydragon> "TRIANGLE TOO"
<RedSnifit> Except for a few lame boss fights
[MMOUT] He got game overs in that game, by the way
<RedSnifit> Well, there are those few lame boss fights
[MMOUT] KH2, Beginner Mode, he gets game overs
<Girlydragon> ...
<Girlydragon> damn
<Girlydragon> that's like
<Girlydragon> mash x and triangle
<Girlydragon> win everything
<Lunamon> MM: don't go to world 2 UNTILL he can beat all or most levels in world 1
<Lunamon> that might help
<RedSnifit> lame boss fights :|
<Lunamon> you beating all the levels won't really help him improve
<Lunamon> at all
<Girlydragon> I also apologize on beforehand about any outburst considering KH2
<Lunamon> :/
<Girlydragon> i haet KH2
<Terra> don't skip 1-4-8 when you're a n00b at the game, like my dad did in SMB1
<Terra> I was pissed off, I wanted to see the other levels
<Lunamon> I dislike SMB1's physics
[MMOUT] I should make a thread.

I kid you not, he told me himself when he did it: Kingdom Hearts 2 is the only game that my nephew has beaten (unless he forgot things). He's bad at playing most games, I've seen him do it. Dying at 1-2 of Phantom Brave, mauling civilians in Mercenaries 2 until he has to pay $1.0M for each one, even trying to test random, very pointless things in Smash Bros. while we fight and complaining about me attacking him while he does it or asking for me to do something when I won't. ("Stop, I'm trying to do something!")

So at the commission of the council called the Just-Us League, I request a list of the finely-artifacted easily-access popular objects called Games that I should force-feed to this newbie of a gamer
Scratch that, just tell me what games I need to be making him play, covering all the bases possible that I don't have to expend money for (mostly ROMs, but eh) (The ROM segment of all bases includes NES, SNES, GB/C/A, DS, and Wii. Preferably NES and SNES, but any will do. Suggest anything else? Provide Emulator recommendation.) (The non-ROM segment includes anything you can send me via mail. Payment will be low, so don't send me anything you expect to get $20 for.)

Two games he needs to play right now:

Zelda lttp and Super metroid. I grew up with those games, they are full of win and everyone should play them at least once! =)

A thousand times this.

I'd recommend more games from both series' though. Maybe Zero Mission, Fusion, Ocarina of Time. All are easy to get/emulate.

Donkey Kong.

If he can't beat that... get the most cruel hard game/hack (preferably a hack) you know, tie him to a chair, and tortute him to play it until he overcomes at least the first obstacle. After several attempts, he must have attained SOME skill.

No, seriously. Assuming he knows the basics, training with something harder than what you want will at least make the real thing easier.

Seconding Super Metroid. I never played it as a kid, and one day I got up with some Julers on skype and had a great time. Highly recommend playing it.

Some games I loved playing as a younger teen would be Monster Rancher (Start with 2), and Jade Cocoon. Both games are pretty deep and simple as far as RPG's go, and a good way to get into the RPG stage in a great way. Once he can beat those two, move him up to Final Fantasy, and after that, Saga Frontier for a real challenge.

For Classics, your nephew might like Megaman. I beat the living shit out of 4 when I was in diapers.

PS1 games, start him out with some Crash Bandicoot.

You should definitely, definitely have him play Kirby Super Star, especially if you're willing to play with him. As a Smash Bros. player, he should have no trouble picking it up and having a good time.
Other Two-player suggestions of mine include Sonic 3 & Knuckles, pretty much any Mario Kart, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii if you happen to have access to that.

The majority of my skills were initially developed with something along the lines of a little "2P" floating above my head, so if this guy is anything like me, he'll get off to a much better start in a similar situation.

Link to the Past = 1003 (blame bobby)
Super Metroid = 1004 (blame bobby again)
Zero Mission = 1
Fusion = 1
Ocarina of Time (via GC CollectorEdition) = 1
Donkey Kong (NES) = 1
Donkey Kong (GB) = 1

Monster Rancher Either it's easy-to-emulate (waiting for Wii-based PSX emulator) or you have giftable hard copy (plus mem card)
Jade Cocoon see previous game

Megaman #? = 1
Crash Bandicoot once again, either easily-emulated or free gifts. Hell, if I had this game I would play it.
Kirby Super Star = 1

Sonic 3 & Knuckles || If emulateable on the Wii, then fine. I'm not doing computer 2P because of the multi-keypress issue most keyboards have
Mario Kart Any = 1 (Actually already doing Wii, he only wants to go Wi-Fi...and proceed to lose frequently. No training against similarly-matched opponents if you're always losing points)
New Super Mario Bros. Wii After the first time I played with him he basically refuses to play single-player because 'it's too hard' or some crap like that. I don't feel like holding his hand through the game.
--(On that note for NSMBWii, I did play as P1 the first day with him as 2P and proceeded to beat the game with me at ~46 lives, not sure, and him at ~11 continues. Mean anything to you?)

Anyways, he's only over on weekends aka Friday 6PM to Sunday 4PM. I'll take the advice and start him with his choice of either Donkey Kong NES or Kirby Super Star(single-player, however). Keep in mind however he did fail playing SMB3 to the point where he fell in one of the first pits at 1-2. Remember the one the mushroom goes in? Yeah, that one. And I think that was without the mushroom being on screen at the time.

Oh yeah, how could I forget Kirby. If he manages to die in the first stage of Spring Breeze with a health system and the ability to fly, then...

We've all been there.

Yeah Kirby Super Star is pretty easy and a good place to start.

Games with level editors tend to have wide ranges of difficulties, and can therefore be good for progressing from easy games to medium-difficulty games without having to deal with large rule shifts. Knytt Stories might be the best option here.

I'm the biggest fan of Roll Away for PlayStation. If you can emulate it you should.

Right, updates. Fuck.

Game1: Donkey Kong
-It took him ~2 hours to complete this after I assigned it. He complained about not being able to do it (of course) and even turned around and started playing another game at one point. Staredown. Eventually I did 'force' him (read: convince with words) to play it, in which he finally beat Stage 2, then later 3.

Game2: Kirby Super Star
-Lucky him, he didn't lose a life in Stage 1-1(the supposed Game Boy remake Spring Breeze, thank you Peardian's Post). Still had less than 100% health at every healing opportunity. (Apparently a long time ago when he left the state for a year this was one of the ROMs that I gave him on CD.) He still lost a life at stages 1-2 and 1-4, plus two lives on stage 1-3. Stage 2-All (Dynablade) I wasn't around for, nor stages 3-1 and 3-2(GreatCaveOffensive). Stage 3-3 however...game over to the Lizard, game over (three times) to the two towers after the Lizard, mostly because of his not-wanting-to-use-the-cannons mindset that got him quite wounded from Bronto Burts. Also the jet in the left side of the tower that hits you right away, that one took him out a few times. Wasn't around for 3-4. Stage 4-All overall he game over'd about twice or thrice, not sure which. And Stage 5-All took ~2 game overs, one at the final boss.

GameO1(which I did not assign but it just might count towards him): Zelda 1
-Died three times on the overworld. I didn't tell him where to go, so he mostly just went right and left from the start, never passing by a dungeon. (I already know IRC told me to tell him where Lv1 is, but that's when he plays it again.)

GameO2: Wario's Woods
-I don't think he knows how to play this. All I see him using is Pick-Up-All. No Pick-Up-One moves, no Kicks, no Stack-Drop (X) moves. Didn't pay attention to which R## he got to, so whatev. Probably ~6 or 7.

However, the talk of Sonic makes me remember: there's still the great deal of games that I have yet to beat. Some obscure ones, sure, but there's those certain ones that I can't think of (maybe) that I have yet to beat. (I just said that) So if you have a couple of suggestions for me as well shoot, just be aware I do have a repertoire of completed games, just that I can't think of them right off the bat. (Once again, nothing that I can't emulate / get for free unless you have a copy of the game I can have)

Nephew's List (When I say yet-to-be-played, I mean for the purposes of this list)
-Donkey Kong (NES) [Cleared 1 full round]
-Kirby Super Star (SNES) [Cleared all 5 standard games]
-Link to the Past (SNES) [yet-to-be-played]
-Super Metroid (SNES) [yet-to-be-played]
-Metroid Zero Mission (GBA) [yet-to-be-played]
-Metroid Fusion (GBA) [yet-to-be-played]
-Zelda: Ocarina of Time (GC) [yet-to-be-played]
-Donkey Kong (GB) [yet-to-be-played]
-MegaMan 1 (NES) [yet-to-be-played]
-Super Mario Kart (SNES) [yet-to-be-played]
-Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Genesis) [This can be played on Wii, right?]

My List
-Nothing added yet

(Also the reason I didn't update the past two weekends was due to his being grounded and unable to play any games...typical timing)

Yes S3&K can be played on Wii provided you buy both S3 and S&K for VC. All you have to do at that point is boot S&K then hit Minus to bring up the menu where you can lock on the games together.

Call me a prickler, but when it comes to cash I am pretty hard-set on spending as little as possible. Shrug and whatever, I'm not shifting very much on that very soon.

(Fuck, when have I played Genesis at all...)

Ah didn't remember that part.

IIRC, there should be a Genesis emulator for the Wii, and I know there's a S3&K rom out there. I played it before using a PC Genesis emulator.

You can definitely emulate genesis games on the will provided you have the homebrew channel installed. I do it all the time, and it will play sonic 3 and knuckles.

Again, that's a hack that messed with a few things (for better or worse; not a value judgment). To make a standard S3&K ROM you... copy the Sonic 3 ROM to the end of the Sonic & Knuckles one. Can be done with copy /b on a command prompt, if I remember right.

Genesis Plus works fine. Played all the way through S3&K a few months ago on it, no problem.

Sonic 2.

Although it may take him an entire year to complete. At least, it took me a year to complete when I was 5, and others who tried it later on in their lives had similarly difficult times.

Without savestates, that is.

Right, updates. Completely forgot about those.

Anyways, last weekend...didn't go so well.
Zelda 3 progress: He's into the sewer and that's about it. Remember the locked door that you have to kill a rat for? By neglecting to kill all the enemies in that room he decided that he missed a key and went back, sufficiently ending any chance for him to exit the sewer that run. (After that he got killed by a bat when he was low on life then was combo'd by cobras next life) Also to mention is that he actually hung around the shelf for what was apparantly a half hour before actually finding the right way to go.
Super Metroid progress: He did fine, for a time. Then he picked up the Morphball. I swear, he must have been 'stuck' in that alcove for minutes before even thinking to shoot anything. And then he was fine until he made it to the bomb miniboss (why does the word Torizo come to mind) of which he decided that using the bOMB was the way to win. Obviously to those of us who've played the game before it doesn't. and he wasted 50 of his ~60 hit points trying to bomb it. Somehow I doubt he's willing to try again.
For the rest of the weekend, all I saw him doing was messing around with watching videos on the PS3 and playing Mercenaries 2. Neither of which I appreciate. The videos because that's more fooling around than anything else, and Mercs 2 because I know his track record of fooling around ($1.0M for killing a civilian. You know what I mean if you've played the game before about how it goes against you for killing many pedestrians). And at home he really doesn't have much of an arsenal from the sounds of it (plus he can't exactly tell me his progress there).

This weekend does not look like a good start. First thing he does when he goes in my room is starts playing Mercs 2. From a new game no less! Sigh...he's-a not gonna get many things done at this rate.

Oh! Also, tried Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis for the first time. At a total amount of 4 deaths I have made it to Labyrinth Zone 2 w/o cheats of any kind. Odd habit here--when I died at Stage 4-2 as the first time I had died that current run, I was not pleased with how I had died and stopped playing from there. Don't remember why, though. My first run had all three deaths being psuedo-bullshit, with one run off a ledge into a pit that I didn't appreciate, being unable to jump out of one of Spring _____ Zone pits with rotating spheres of pain (don't know how), then jumping around the moving boxes and getting crushed while the box was moving away from the floor I was jumping to--why did that happen. I know it's not a thread about me here, but damn everything if I've been through this game before.

(Now this might be a problem. It's like if I don't near-force him into playing the damn games then he won't have a thing to do with them. But I believe it to be for his own good. What should I be doing about this, I wonder? I understand if he doesn't feel the way that I do...but how can I make him see it the way I do (legally)?
