I have that too, Kinda.
They all have some soup company on the back, and are made of cardboard.
And I didn't know what a pog was until 5 seconds ago.

There's still a rotary phone in this house I live in now.

I also still have a set of XP boot floppies I use from time to time when XP decides to kill itself.

Yep, same here. I built a rather impressive collection of ROMs in a matter of weeks.

This was back in 1997, when crappy ROM sites were all over the place, NESticle was still being updated, and VSMC could run Zelda in lovely shades of puke green, with no sound, at 3 FPS...

Oh yeah, back when you'd download ROMs and sites idiotically claimed if you deleted them 1 day later you'd be safe from any trouble.

And NESticle, which seemed more obsessed with gore and vulgarity than actually emulating anything. XP

Yeah, those were some odd times.

Does anyone else remember old ROM places that made you vote for their Web site before you got your ROM?

Also, filenames weren't standardized with the (J) (U) (E) [!] and such. I remember a SMW ROM with "MARIO4.smc" (or something similar) as the filename. Funny how despite Nintendo being all "Emulation is evil, people who use ROMs are evil people!", ROMs are so much easier to find now than they were in 2001.

Also, the no-title SMB1 ROM that only worked right in Nesticle. Most of my old SMB1 hacks are still patched to this ROM, and I'm rather sick of having to do A and Start or end up in 0-1.

By the way, why is it .smc anyway? Super...Mintendo Cartridge?

The only thing I recall that was really old was an old NES machine. It was an hand-me-down. I played the hell outta that thing for a looong time, until it finally cacked out in the late ninety's and I threw it out. Upgraded to a SNES, after that. Birthday gift, I think.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Super Magic Card. An old dumper, likely one of the most popular, so it just caught on. I've also seen a haldful of .fig ROMs (Fighter Pro).

I think some people are making the move to .sfc, though, which makes more sense (Super FamiCom).

Now we just need to do that for N64 (.n64 stored in N64 system native endianness rather than the v64/z64 nonsense.) and Sega Genesis (anything but .bin! .bin and .dat are the most retarded extensions ever.).

I remember some Apple II disk images having the .dsk extension, which I assume just means "disk". It doesn't even specify what system it's for.

Of course, with disk images you have a whole mess of formats. Commodore 64 images have .d64, .d71, .d81, .x64, .g41, etc. Some of those were differences in the actual media (e.g., a .d81 file is a 9 cm disk's image), but others might just be different dump formats.

I remember thinking it was completely legal, then seeing one of those things and just going "OH GOD THE FBI IS GONNA GET ME!!!" and deleted everything.

I was one silly kid.

I used to think that drawing a map based on a map from the NES Game Atlas, even if I never showed it to anyone or took it outside the house, would cause the police to find me, bust into the house, and arrest me. I was like 7.

My dad downloaded ROMs and snes emulator and such back in the old days... I just assumed it was like, normal PC games and played them. XD

Also, are there like, more then one version of sonic 3D? as the version I played way way way back in the days does not seam quite the same as the one I played on mega collection. :/

I didn't get a computer until late November of 1999 IIRC, so I don't remember a lot of the things you guys are talking about. I have a couple of 5.25" floppies somewhere, but I've never owned a computer that could read them. I got rid of most of the 3.5" floppies I had, but I never really used them except for school, which was still using them when I graduated in 2007 (my current desktop only even has a floppy drive because I salvaged it from my old computer, and this isn't even that new of a computer [from 2004, I think]).

I saw an mp3 site claim that recently. I only ever did this for one ROM IIRC, all of my other ROMs I own the cartridge to.

When Sonic X-treme was canceled, they decided to release a version for the Sega Saturn.

So wait, they released Sonic 3D as to make up for the loss of Sonic X-treme?

Zomg...
- Zany Golf on the IIGS! 'twas the shiznit. Speaking of old school, the IIGS, with its one-button ball mouse. One button! And it used a ball, not a laser! CRRRAZY!
- Atari 2600 on the Space Command 12" B&w Zenith TV. Turn it on and let those tubes warm up! You know it's ready when the white dot in the center expands out to take up the whole screen and then shortly thereafter it starts snowing and you can hear the white noise of static.
- Blowing in the NES cart, getting really far in Zelda (or any other game) and then the console gets bumped and the "flash of death" starts.
- Gameboys that were heavier than a DS (non-lite) and bigger. Those things were AA hogs!
- 80's QUALITY American rolling-iron. The kind of stuff that would lose a screw from some trim piece every 500 miles or 50 potholes. Like my parents Caprice Wagon, the diesel one that my parents couldnt wait to trade in, or the gas one that kept running after you shut it off like the diesel one would.
- The 5lb TV remote
- VHS tapes. Who hasn't had their VCR eat at least 1? Or have the VCR that wouldn't eject that rental tape!
- The camcorder that weighed 30lbs. It wasn't the camcorder that weighed so much, it was the tape recording deck you had to carry in a separate bag on your shoulder, with the huge battery in it. The wire ran from the camera to the deck (which was a VCR that came off the deck part in your home theater to be transported). You were lucky if the battery lasted 30 minutes.

Ha! Far too well.

1. Good cartoons...oh wait, it's a thread about stuff....

1. Cassette players and recording songs off of the radio to play it with.
2. VHS tapes and recording The Simpsons on them in fear of missing a new episode.
3. Soda with real sugar in them.
4. CD players and having to deal with carrying a bunch of CDs around.
5. Wordprocessers.
6. Green computer screens.

zomg! Setting the timer on the VCR to automatically record shows! Going to bed? Out at grandmas? Don't forget to set the VCR timer to record Married with Children!

I remember I used to tape a lot of anime back in the day, on Toonami and later Adult Swim... also, I would tape myself playing my game systems, such as Final Fantasy VII. =D

I'm thinking about uploading some of these to YouTube eventually... once I get the required components. I have a ton of old commercials from the 1990s and 2000s, among other things.

All on a 1990 Panasonic VCR that actually worked great 90% of the time, until I finally got a VCR/DVD combo in 2005, a mere several months before I left my parents...

(I also still have a 1986 Zenith TV, which still works great today... in fact, I still use it for many of my old games.)
