As part of a Term paper, I need to do a comparison of various virtualization suites, but I don't know of many (Just VirtualBox, VMWare, and MVPC2007). Are there any good free virtualization suites available that aren't in the three mentioned above?

DOSBox doesn't count? As well as various emulators, depending on how "virtual" you want to go.

I guess I should probably clarify

x86 Virtualization, something you might be able to consider for use in a SOHO (Small Office / Home Office) environment.

It's an enigma
----------------------------------------------------
I don't mean to hijack this thread and not contribute anything... but if you figure out a way to virtualize OSX Snow Leopard in all of this, please talk with me. It'd REALLY help for my iPhone dev class (so I dont have to travel all the way across campus to the friggin mac labs )

Otherwise... uh, I think lifehacker ran an article on PC virtualization once. There might be some information if you do some digging.

Don't forget QEMU and Bochs. Those are both open-source, I believe.

Also, Sine: I believe someone did a Mac OS X VMWare package. Treeki sent it along to me a while back, but I couldn't use it (my processor doesn't support SSE3). Ask him about it when you have the chance

I used to use Virtual PC 2009, but then I switched to VirtualBox. I find that VirtualBox works better for Linux than Virtual PC, but I had to do some mingling to get Windows 98SE to work. (I also have a Russian 98SE running on VirtualBox, too. =D)

I'm on Vista, so I can't use MVPC2009/WVPC

Thanks for the QEMU and Bochs tips

There's also Parallels Desktop. Some prefer it over VMWare, but it offers pretty much the same featureset. As for it being "free" ... well, it's not. There's a trial though.

Heh, don't forget to compare VMWare Server and VMWare Workstation. It's like the difference between shit brown and awesome.

Also, not sure if DOSEMU does any virtualization.

I've used both VirtualBox and QEMU personally, but they're already up there

I know of only xen otherwise, but I believe that it's a whole thin operating system ...

I use VirtualBox running Windows 3.1 for a few old games, but it causes a lot of errors and crashes

I would use Virtual PC, but my Windows 7 wasn't expensive enough.

You can't use VPC 2004?

VPC 2004 and 2007 don't work on Win7, as far as I know.

Try this out, it may work: x86 / x64 - It's the download for Professional (which seems to be the same as the download for the other supported versions).

I'm not sure whether it will work, but it's worth a try - I don't know whether it's just the downloadable XP mode that's restricted, or the entire VPC app.

According to a Google search, VPC 2007 does work on Win7, although it didn't work for me. So if the version I linked above doesn't work, you could try 2007 - even if it doesn't work, nothing will screw up.
