Because "loving", "gently caress", "surprise sex", "poo poo" and such are loving hilarious.

Plus, it's about loving time we got some filters to protect the younger members of the forum from my excessive swearing and poo poo. Why in the gently caress haven't we done this sooner?

...

Yeah, the various wordfilters around there are just plain hilarious in some instances. I don't see why not, anyway.

Because to be honest they are just words and overreaction to them is what makes them 'bad'?

I don't really care either way, as curse words are meaningless to me.

I miss Internet filter.

But more hilarious word filters would be fun.

That'd be something to figure out funny ones.

I know they're just words. But some people may have parents / teachers / other supervisory people about who might be less than impressed when those words come up.

And as I said, the Something Awful word filters are loving hilarious, so there's at least some humor value to be had in the event that filtering is applied.

Oh of course, I would prefer the filtering to be optional. But I don't see what the gently caress is wrong with adding a filter for those that might require one.

Curses, you may have a point. Optional filtering would be interesting. (and useful).

YAY! And your teachers / etc will just think I am a very romantic person, what with "loving" and "gently caress" appearing on average five times per paragraph. Yeah, I might have a problem with language.... you want to loving make something of it?

One of the things I've always loved about Acmlmboards and their clones is the lack of swear filters. For that matter, SA's filters suck. But hey, if they're optional, then I see no reason to complain.

I wouldn't mind having some word filters put in place myself. They are, of course, useful if "other people" are hovering around your screen, and I also find them rather funny for some odd reason.

I miss the filter myself...

Yeah, we need this back.

Didn't someone post a userscript in the computer forum that can do word filtering? If you're using Firefox or Opera you could always do that.

That was me, and I'm trying to fix some performance and other major issues in it at the moment.

Hm, word filters could very easily be done with the smiley code, the only problem being that they'd show up in the FAQ list of smilies

I can see the benefits of having a swear filter for people trying to post from school, but honestly I don't really think swearing is too overblown at this point... and most schools would probably object to anyone using a message board

Something awful is fail... why would we want to be like them?

*thinks*

I don't believe in curse filters, but I like the idea of filters in general. Hehe... for words like Internet, and the like... 4chan had some hilarius filters... such as "Gullible -> Intelligent."

Except, you know... there's code for regular word filters elsewhere... somewhere...
Like zeon => shit.
In lib/threadpost.php I think.

I'll just let it be known that I HATE word filtering and I will become very surly if any mandatory filters are imposed.

Hm, well, my knowledge of the code is from looking at 1.61 several years ago, so it's natural that I would be somewhat rusty

Well, the point would be so it IS optional.

I don't mind swearing -- which should be evidenced by how much of it I do -- but some people may need such a feature. In schools its less of an issue (although certain words can trigger automatic systems to filter a page) as forums are considered not appropriate anyway. But in homes with parents and siblings and whatnot it may be a very valuable feature for some users.

And for those of us who don't need the feature then we don't have to worry about it.

Anything that increases accessibility without hindering those who don't need it is a good thing in my book.
