As many of you know by now, I run a comic. And as many of you who read it know, it's not that pretty to look at. I want to make it better than this default Comcast has. I want to make my own. But as you can tell from my link color on this post that I don't really know a lot about HTML. As in, I only know how to italicize, bold, underline, insert an image, insert a link, and several other things, maybe. And the worst part is that when I try to do this on my own by copying code from other comic websites, I get pretty overwhelmed pretty fast with all those tables and hex values and crap that often I get rid of something and I don't know what or how but ends up making the thing look like crap. Is there anything out there I can read that'll help me to make sites look more or less like the ones I linked to and not make me say "Eh, I'll do this another time" for the 5th or 6th time?

Well, when you're looking at a website, look at it this way: A website is a collection of rectangles. These rectangles have text- and image-based content inside them. So, when you want to make your site look nice, imagine these overall rectangles, as solid rects of colour.

Now put into those rects (still in your mind) the content, like arrows or the comic panel. Once this is gone, try arranging your HTML to do this, and then add the details slowly. Initially stick everything into <.. style=""> tags
and as you duplicate anything, move it to CSS.

As far as handling the Hex for colours goes, that's more just a skill you learn over time :/

Paulguy's Post configuration
Well I'm a lazyass and I learnednit from http://w3schools.com/. Don't let this post layout say anything about their site. It's quite old and I cobbled it together while I was learning so it's messy.

I learned mostly by looking at existing HTML on sites, but that was also over 10 years ago, at a time when there was no (or few) CSS or JavaScript, and pages were generally simpler

Hex color codes are easy enough, though You just have to know how to add red, green and blue to get different colors, and count in hex (think of the 00-FF range as 00-99, but with letters between 9 and 10) ...

I learned most of the HTML I know by basically tooling around with Notepad.

I don't know much HTML. And my knowledge is kind of outdated.

We had a book on HTML. It was published in 1998 though, when CSS was this newfangled thing that few Web sites bothered with. I remember it covering how to do frames. Does anyone even use those within their Web site anymore? The only current usage of frames I can think of is cached pages from Google.

Also, back then they tended to recommend tags to be in ALL CAPS. I always preferred lowercase though.

I learnt some basic HTML at school, and then I read this book. However, to design a good website, you not only need to know how to write the code but have an aesthetic sense too, and that is much harder to overcome than learning HTML.

Yeah. I've been writing code since 1997 (even before I had an internet account) but my sense of aesthetics ain't the greatest.

This is about the best I can do, un-aided by a web graphics person. That is, in minimalism.

Lain's post №638

I originally learned proper XHTML and CSS by studying Angus Turnbull's website TwinHelix. It helped me quite a bit back in ~2003.

I had a site of my own on Comcast before, and after they deleted it once (and my email),
and after they redesigned their dumb interface and made it stupid,
it became so I couldn't get any html to work right on any of the the pages. At the time I thought they disabled it.
I got annoyed and stopped using anything of theirs.

And their website page didn't load under Linux either.
And they wouldn't give me my email back either.

Sweet Jesus, that's rough. Yeah, Comcast is pretty much something that gives its users everything, but in the most crappy way possible.

Anyway, I was on a webcomic forum, and they gave me several hosting sites I could be interested in. I'm going to try out Smack Jeeves, since it's one of the few where I don't have to pay for anything. Though it could take a while, since I have a million things to do and too goddamn lazy to get off my ass and do it.
