This is amazing. I've been following this technology for years and I'm so glad to hear this shit come to fruition. I can't wait to see a demo of this sometime.

There's also a statement by the MDA (Missile Defense Agency) here:

It's not quite as fantastic as you may think. The way it works is that the laser heats up the missile until it explodes. These aren't energy projectiles that explode on contact or anything. Still, it's a great advancement when it comes to defense. If it works on ballistic missiles, it should work on enemy aircrafts if aimed properly.

From what I know, it takes so much energy to hold a strong enough laser up enough time that it would be cheaper to just send a missile to take out shit midair instead. :<

Anyhow, I'm in question off how much use this will have looking at how the world is today. :/

Well, that's the thing. The lasers appear to finally be hitting their targets, so, even though they are expensive now, they can start making more of them, and with economies of scale, eventually protect the US with laser defense systems.

Of course, this will only protect us from ballistic missiles. With the insanity they're developing that could just drop giant dumb hunks of metal from outer space, it may require more advances before we can truly consider ourselves safe from flying projectiles which explode and come from far away.

The second article states that it less expensive per hit than using counter-missiles. You have to figure they're only powering a laser for a few seconds, instead of having to pay for metal, computer parts, rocket fuel, and the means to put that all together. As technology advances, they'll find better and cheaper ways to power the lasers and decrease the cost even further.

Actually, nobody was expecting it to do that. You don't flip the switch in your room and watch light slowly cascade down the walls do you?

You're thinking of Energy bolts, not Lasers. Star Wars as a series had this retconned, as well. Lasers are straight lines from point A to point B.

That's not what was expected in the Star Wars program, anyway.

It's generally assumed nowadays in most circles like this that those "shots" are composed of something else (and we'll call them energy bolts). What you're failing to mention is the fact that light, concentrated to a line, is highly accurate. Even as photons it is extremely light.

Energy weapons as a whole have been on the rise a lot. For example, there's the truck-mounted Active Denial System, which heats the surface of the skin until the individual cannot stand being struck by it. Useful in crowd control.

The PHASR (Personell Halting And Stimulation Response) Rifle emits a pair of green lasers to blind and dazzle would be attackers temporarily. Although this is an older weapon from a few years ago, and may soon be getting replaced.

Hey, I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, so I've only known of the weapons as lasers, as in other movies and games. I know how light works.

And yes, lasers are very precise at great distances, but they are only as accurate as the people or machines who aim them.

I believe he means the Star Wars program initiated by Reagan in the 1980s. A quick sum up of it was one upping the Soviets with tactical nukes/missiles from space. This is certainly not that at all.

We're actually starting to see all the imagination and work on laser weaponry come to fruition. I'm very excited to see how far they will take this. The last thing I had heard before this was a laser at some US University which could burn through a fair few inches of wood in under 5 seconds, leaving a clean hole. Before that, they tested a plane which had a laser attached to its nose which could shoot down on-coming projectiles. (In fact, I had witnessed a prototype of this exact plane on NOVA several years back.)

So it's about godamn time Ronald Regan pulled his bluff on Star Wars against to Soviet Union.

You have to think though: now that I think about it, that shit was hilarious. But now: it's really fucking happening.

PS- Link is fucked up OP

E- I still can't believe the Soviets went bankrupt over footage of star wars.

Star Wars as a series of chronically challenged movies involving swords made of glow and Crusaders with ESP and telekinesis is largely responsible for misrepresenting the laser as we know it today. Even Star Trek in the 60's was a little better about it, and has since only improved their image of how a beam of ANYTHING works (and they don't use lasers)

Star Wars as a program... see Tanks.

but yeah I referred to both Star Wars... es... before.

Its actually very possible for a relatively small laser device to do immense damage very quickly, but not cheaply. Any video on youtube of a PULSE laser will demonstrate its capacity to shoot a tiny hole through sheet metal from a few feet away. Take into consideration that we as humans are very VERY wet on the inside, and that the laser has just VAPORIZED the metal in its path.

...now imagine one of King Cobra's men getting all the water in that immediate part of the body vaporized by a laser boring through them in the blink of an eye. KER-SCHPLORT!!!

...however, as I said, not cheaply. PLUGGED IN, it typically takes at least 3 hours to charge up a shot (yeah they call em shots.) larger ones might not take as much, but...

2010 was actually the deadline for laser weapons, so hey. I'm just lookin ahead.
