Google launched Buzz yesterday as an add-on for Gmail. It allows you to share photos, videos and links with your Gmail contacts. It also includes the ability to include status updates.

Google seems to be playing catch up with Facebook, maybe because of this.

I'm willing to bet that it's ten times better than facebook.

Even if it's an "Pointless innovation2.

Google just does stuff better.

At this point, most ANYTHING is better than facebook. (Can they PLEASE stop screwing around with their interface).

Whatever happened to keeping things simple?

The irony is that Web 2.0 is SUPPOSED to make things simpler, but a company obsessed with market share isn't interested in that.

Web 2.0 does not make things simpler, it just gives developer more tools to make the Internet experience be like a desktop computer

Something about the birds and the bees?

Well, I guess what I mean is that used properly, it can simplify things.

95% of the time, it does the opposite, of course.

Web 2.0 is all about the latest in ajaxy flashy graphics because nobody could take a hint that making your application look like it fell out of a Hollywood computer was a terrible idea. brb, vomiting

You see, when a Google and a Twitter [trope=IfYouKnowWhatIMean]get together[/trope], they produce a bunch of search engine optimizating social networking media experts. And that's home improvement.

For the most part, I prefer Web 1.0. It's like when a lot of games tried to sell based on graphics alone. Now it's happening with Web sites.

Take my school's Web site, for instance. It uses a glitzy Flash thing with a lengthy initial animation as the navigation pane It's not even positioned where you'd expect a navigation pane. Usually I just click on the non-Flash SITEMAP or SEARCH links and go from there.

@Terra

I agree with you completely. I hate web apps and miss the day when the internet just worked and didn't cause my web browser to require more ram than Bioshock 2.

Even if Facebook managed to implement some kind of email service it would no doubt be just as shitty as their lousy attempt at an Instant Messenger. They wouldn't possibly be able to compete for at least a couple of years with all the troubleshooting and debugging they will have to do. They just don't have the ingenuity to make it work in my opinion. Facebook will eventually be replaced by some other NEW networking site and the cycle of filling the internet with pointless stuff will continue.

All these additions are painful. It seems that lately, no matter where I go I have shitty internet and most pages now take 5 billion years to load. And when they do, often they don't work because a few php included files weren't loaded because the net hiccuped when it got to that part of the file.

This is what developers are doing to what should be essentially a simple service.
