Lain's post №611

For those of you who actually record music and/or skype, what microphone do you use? Right now, I'm using this fairly cheep (but good quality, it seems) headset microphone from Nexxtech, although I would like to find something that I can either talk to the side, or talk right into it and have a rich sound. In other words, a microphone that you would normally see in a studio.

I'm thinking of getting the Heil PR-40. I can talk off of it quite a bit away, and it'll pick me up. I can talk straight right down the barrel and have a rich, bassy sound that you probably would not hear from a headset mic. The price for it is $325, while the boom and shock mount (both from Heil) costs $109 and $95 separately. Add in the conversion box and cable will cost ~$125, I'd say I would be down about $500-some.

Now, there's that. I could always get a USB headset, although I would like to be able to position the mic wherever I wish, so for instance I'm streaming live, I could just move the mic out of the way when I won't be speaking for long periods.

How should I go about this?

I use a headphone/boom mic combo from Logitech, it cost $20 tops, I found it laying around in a Staples store. It works great and doesn't get volumitis (think of when people are cut off mid-sentence by their microphone auto-muting). It's a bit basic and hurts to wear too long, though. Sound is also relatively cheap.

I use a Tritton AX 180 for my headset, pretty sweat and the microphone can be removed or muted.

Obviously, I wouldn't record music with it (I, myself, record my stuff in a direct imput manner, more or less).

For music, I'd probably use a Shure SM57, I guess.

I picked up a shitty generi-mic from Best Buy and it seems to work fine for just about everything...

Shure SM-57 for instruments, SM-58 for vocals. Industry standard and I swear by both. They're the same exact thing, only the 58 has a pop filter (that silver golf ball looking thing) which makes it better suited for vocals.

I personally use that Logitech headset for when I bought Socom US Navy Seals for the PS2. And it gives off incredible quality.

Best of all, they are only like 3 bucks at some used game store. I recommend picking this up before buying something else. Some people on skype ask me this question all the time and they are amazed that such a microphone actually gives off excellent quality.

Now the sound on the headset sucks. Gonna have to call it there.

I just use the one built into my laptop.

It's actually pretty sensitive and works fine, as far as I'm aware...

Now that I think about it, the last time that I streamed for those who were there to hear me speak, how did it sound? Mind you, this is a small analog mic on a headset.
