I saw this and I thought I'd post a thread about it. It looks like GIMP is finally going to be usable!

http://arstechnica.com/open-source/reviews/2010/02/hands-on-new-single-window-mode-makes-gimp-less-gimpy.ars

It reminds me quite a bit of Paint.NET's UI, except with docking (which Paint.NET really does badly need).

Too bad the official release of GIMP 2.8 is scheduled for December 2010

Are they finally going to switch to GEGL, after GEGL was announced in like 2006? Also, something like this is more deserving of 3.0, not yet another 2.x version. =/

I just reread the article.

In an effort to solve such problems and boost ease of use, the program's developers are rethinking its user interface. This broad effort has involved extensive analysis, expert evaluations, and community brainstorming.
Yes, because it takes so much extensive analysis and community brainstorming to know that people have been begging for a single window mode for years! :specialed: Nice one there developers.

Also, it's still GTK, so it will most likely still look horrible on Windows. But at least now it will work without creating 20 different windows!

I never liked The GIMP's interface. It took forever to figure out how to do stuff that's super-easy in Paint, like draw in a straight line. I'm still not sure how to make a box.

Awww, just in time for me to have finally figured out how GIMP works after several years of trying.

It was the same for me when I started out photoshop.

But... knowing photoshop don't really help me when working with GIMP!
Plus, the more then one window thing is a pain the ass for me!

For many years, I used Paint Shop Pro 7... and I was pretty much used to it for years. I switched to Mac in 2007, and started to use GIMP, because there was no PSP for Mac... but even though I did switch back to Windows in time for 7, I still use GIMP today. =D

Holy Moley... You mean Gimp might be usable now!? No way...
This might actually replace my photoshop if this performs better.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I'm pretty good with the gimp, but I do find that I tend to fumble with the gimp's at least 3 windows along with all the other windows on my desktop... it almost needs it's own workspace, but that's just inconvenient. What other option does a Linux user have? :p (I know there's Krita but I try to stay away from KDE stuff.. might try it out since I had to install a whole bunch of shit just to install Okteta. gah).

Yes, because doing something so different that people have a hard time adapting is an intelligent design choice :specialed:

I still prefer Paint.NET to GIMP for my basic image-editing needs, even though it has fewer features. I will welcome the interface change when Paint.NET isn't an option, like at work, where I use a Linux machine.

Too bad it won't be released for a while.

A lot of people find the interface rather clunky, so they're bringing it somewhat up-to-date. Is it really that hard to understand?

Also, multiwindow interface with lots of windows + Aero glass = holy shit my computer's on fire!

The issue is mostly that there's only a few people who figure it out enough to have it that way, so they're making it easier so it gets more users.

Which is fine with me, as I've only half-figured it out by now.

The argument that GIMP was unusuable because of its multi-window layout is not only wrong, it brings into question the intelligence of someone who would make such a statement.

Photoshop for OS X has ALWAYS had a multiwindow layout.

I'm sure it was not unusable, but was so fucking unpractical for me that I decided not to use it. I would also prefer if you don't insult my intelligence based on the applications I run. =)
