Try opening the .nes in a hex editor and moving your mouse back and forth over the first 0x10 bytes very quickly.

I heard people used to do that back in the old days when their ROMs were dusty and didn't work

Take a screenshot of your hex editor with the ROM open. Copy and paste a resized picture of the character over every zero. That should do it

Maybe your hex editor is not compatible. What hex editor are you using?

You might want to try using a toaster, I've never really had good results with any other hex editors.

Sorry, but to use this feature you must hook up your Wii to a Nintendo DS (only Phat version works), then plug in the DS-to-NES adaptor ($19.95, stopped being sold in 2007) and put your NES game in that. No Game Genie support.
