I think it sounds kinda arrogant to assume that all the people around today that buy sonic games have played the older games.

Plus, they have used his new look for quite some time now so the only clash to this I think is that they will release another port for the DS. (That obviously should/would use the old GFX/look as it's a port)
Beside, maybe he was planed to have long spikes in the older games too but due to limitations they cut it? Beside, characters look change over time. =)
Mario have also changed his look slightly over the years (for people that pay close attention.)

No, not at all actually. I work for a summer swim league and during the meets all the kids bring their DS' and such. I brought Sonic 2 with me. Every one of those kids wanted to play it simply because Sonic Rush wasn't 'as cool' as a few of them put it. I was actually caught by surprise by that to be honest.

He wasn't at all. Actually, concept art has him with short spiny spikes. He also had a cool set of fangs at one point.

Regarding the "Episode" thing: the only thing that "episdoe one" implies is that there will be more in the future. (Whether that's good or bad is impossible to know at this point.) As some of you have mentioned, I think this will be more like Sonic 3 & Knuckles in that every episode will be pieces of the the whole "game," Sonic the Hedgehog 4, yet they will all still be able to stand on their own; not even Sega would release a game without some sort of finale just because it's just an "episode," and not the entire game. (We'll just have to see about the length, though.)

Regarding the gameplay: as I recall, the two Sonic games following the original implemented at least one completely new element and several minor additions to the gameplay, effectively "fixing" what was not broken each and every time. Why should that suddenly be a problem to the point at which the gameplay should remain just like it was in S3&K?
Granted, Sega doesn't have a very good track record these days with their additions, and even I'm skeptical about, say, a homing attack working all that well, but I really doubt that change is necessarily the enemy here, which that brings me to...

Regarding the design: Even if this is supposed to be a direct sequel to the Sonic games of old, I think it's sort of silly to expect the game to retain all of the little details that the old ones had in their design. I didn't get upset when the colors of the Mario Brothers' overalls changed, or when Luigi seemed to stop being Mario's identical twin (or his carbon copy, for that matter), or even when Princess Toadstool became Princess Peach, and I also wasn't upset about these modern details remaining in New Super Mario Bros. when it came out, even though it was to the Mario series back then as Sonic 4 is to the Sonic series right now; somehow, I doubt any of you were upset about that either. What makes the length of some spikes, some dust, and the difference between a real name and a popular nickname (that might as well be a real name) so special here?
Essentially, my point is if they're going to make a 'Sonic 4,' it ought to be done without just making another S3&K.

So, yeah, I'd like to see Sega actually pull off making a game worthy of being called a direct sequel to my beloved S3&K while still adding that touch of originality that every good sequel needs to stand on its own, but it's still far too early to expect anything of the sort yet.

Fun Fact: Phantasy Star Online used "Episode 1" and "Episode 2" as well, but they were also complete games in and of themselves. Did I mention this was by Sonic Team?

Things I spotted while poking through the video...
The palmtree (Found first apparently):

The corkscrew on the left side cuts off when
it goes offscreen (Another first from me):

This is a parallax scrolling object in the foreground,
and also pops -in- to the frame much like the corkscrew does
(Possibly first? No one knew about it on Retro...):

And this is the granddaddy creation I put together earlier today
(First too, minutes before someone else at retro did it in lowdef and with tons of hud/Sonic):

Click the thumbnail for the large high def version.
It's big, and who knows when Photobucket might decide to take it down for
bandwidth consumption (keeps getting linked in full at Sonic Retro).

That's not too promising... let's hope it's something they're still working on.

Nice job on piecing together the level together. Sure, it looks nice, but I hope they'll also be fixing some of the little graphical mistakes, such as shadows cutting out midway and such.

I'm guessing it'll be around 1000 Wii Points. Only games that cost more: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King, Pokemon Rumble, World of Goo (all 1500), Harvest Moon: My Little Shop, Tetris Party (both 1200).

You want to make the game accessible, you don't want to overprice it. It'll cost roughly the same across the board.

Ever since the announcement of a new Sonic game came out I've been looking forward to what it was going to be like. After finding out that Sonic was going to be the only playable character and seeing the trailer I am definitely looking forward to this game. I couldn't care less about Sonic's appearance, just because he has the newer look doesn't necessarily mean that this game is going to be like some of the other recent disappointments that we've seen. The only thing in my eyes that will make or break this game for me is the level design. I want to find puzzles and switches and various other things inside of the levels like the first three games had, when I read the quote "speed returns" in the first trailer I couldn't help but think about how the Sonic Rush games were almost all about running and moving forward instead of the others things that I loved.

I guess that I'll have to wait and see how it turns out .
