Check.

In layman's terms: 6-core and 8-core Intel processors that work in the i7 socket that aren't in servers but rather desktops.

AMD also has a 6-core Thuban aimed for the very same but hasn't released a date yet to compete with this.

EDIT: Based on Westmere architecture. The actual codename of those six-cores is Gulftown.
EDIT 2: More, better, intel.

This marks the moment that I upgrade my desktop.

I would if I went the Intel route.

Kinda waiting for AMD to tell me if their Thuban can handle an AM2+ socket or if it can't. Otherwise it's a BS mobo replacement after I finished putting mine in last year.

Total lack of the megahurtz on these things aparrently?

I mean six cores is nice if you have a multicore application, otherwise single core programs are just going to be even slower

Reading up it looks to be...

Westmere 6C (codename Gulftown) is a native six-core chip as shown above. Intel has crammed 1.17 billion transistors into a die that's approximately 240mm sq. The new chip carries 12MB up L3 (up from Nehalem's 8MB) and a TDP of 130W at 3.33GHz. In addition to the addition of hardware AES encryption instruction decode support, Intel has made a number of improvements to Gulftown's power consumption.

And as for core-scaling, I know AMD's been working on OpenCL which scales applications to upwards of 24-core operation (possibly better by now). Intel's probably looking into similar technology.

Depends on the architecture, and what the MIPS is. Hertz-for-Hertz, newer processors are much, much more powerful than even year-old ones. S'why you can get better performance at a lower clock than the old P4s

I'm also waiting for new AMD processors. In the meantime, I'm doing more unusual upgrades, like upgrading my hard drive. New hard drives are on average twice as fast throughput-wise than my old one, so I can shave several seconds off of HDD-intensive operations.

Yes!

But getting an i7 compatible motherboard would be tricky and expensive. :|
