There are simply words some people are unable to spell right, no matter how hard they try to actually get it right.

For some reason, I am totally unable to correctly spell gray because, in 1st grade, I sat next to a kid whose last name was Grey. It just confused me then, and I guess it still confuses me now.

I think I type "becasue" more often than the correct "because", but that's finger trouble.

I often have to think when spelling words ending in -ant/-ent or -ance/-ence. I used to have trouble with "separate", which came out as "seperate".

I used to have trouble with negative and positive, but that's all good now.

"Grey" is just as acceptable as "gray". It's more common in British and Canadian English, I believe, although none of the dictionaries I've checked even specify "grey" as a chiefly British form of the word, just an alternative spelling. As a matter of fact, I personally prefer the spelling "grey" to "gray".

Speaking of British/American differences:
Originally posted by wikipeeeeedia on doubled consonants
The British English doubling is required for all inflections (-ed, -ing, -er, -est) and for the noun suffixes -er and -or. Therefore, the British English counsellor, cruellest, modelling, quarrelled, signalling, traveller, and travelling. Americans usually use counselor, cruelest, modeling, quarreled, signaling, traveler, traveling, etc.

I have a tendency to use the British English variants of all of these words if I don't watch myself. They look more natural to me, but probably not to most Americans.
If not for the fact that I'd probably seem like a complete weirdo, I'd probably be using "colour", "favourite", "judgement", etc. I've had to train myself to write like an actual American and not a Canadian, I swear.

Also, "separate", similar to Terra.

I tend to prefer UK spellings for some words. I started using "colour", "centre", etc. back in 2006 as a protest against George W. Bush and while my vocabulary has drifted back to American (I don't call elevators "lifts" anymore) I tend to keep the British spellings. There are exceptions though; I think "oe" spellings (oestrogen, foetus, etc.) are ugly so I just use the "e" variants (estrogen, fetus, etc.).

Since I'm on IE and there's no spell check...I guess I can't hide. And you know what, I bet if I try now, I'll spell it right.

And now my mind is blank.

Despite being American through and through, I prefer many of the British spellings of those words. Only 'Gray' and 'color' are ones I disagree with the British one on.

I had trouble spelling "Maybe" for a good while. Someone pointed it out here, if I'm remembering correctly.

Whenever I'm unsure of a word's correct spelling, I head over to dictionary.com to find out the proper.
"Mozzarella" is the only word I can recall (awful memory) that took some time to memorize.

Any words I misspell out of ignorance of the correct form are usually quickly corrected by a ~certain person that I know~. Since my grammar/orthography are of very few things I have passion for in terms of knowledge, I make an effort to learn the correctness of my errors the second they're made apparent to me.

occasionally

I usually put an n after the first a, then correct myself. (fun fact, I spelled it right first time this time.)

I made a thread like this about three months ago. Basically it was my misspelling with the word "Lose"

I would spell it as "Loose".

Yeah, I am being serious.

Lately I have gotten better. But some words slip by. As long as I can understand you then I won't complain.

Receive. I always spell it as "recieve" just because I never got the point of the "except after C" bit.

Nostalga(Nostalgia) I have a bad habit of droping(Dropping) the I from words that I spell, or dropping an extra letter. I have become quite a bit better than my first years online though.

I have this problem with many words... but I can't remember most of the them at this moment.

Last week I finally learned to spell remember with two "m"s though!

And I just spelled finally with one "l" great way to start a post like this! (I spellcheck before most of my posts)

Same here. One of the chick's at work didn't believe me when I told her the right spelling. I had to show her with a dictionary. She's still in denial.
