Only $30.

What is Starcraft?
Starcraft is an RTS game in which you choose three races. The Terran, which is the humans, Protoss, which is the Alien futuristic, and the Zerg, which is the Alien scourge race. Each high has their highs and their lows. But it makes to be a good game.

Why should I buy this?
If you like RTS games. Then starcraft is your best bet on a good balanced RTS game. If you dislike it, then I would still suggest this game for it's playability.

Battle.net?
If you have played a blizzard game in the past 10 years, Battle.net is the primary place to play Blizzard games. Diablo, Starcraft, Warcraft, and even WoW all run on the same server. Starcraft makes full on not only playable servers; the mods too.

Mods?
Yes, there are mods in this game. From straight from DOtA and other RPG mods, you can play it all. Even if you are not a fan of the series. As long as you can find the servers, you can play it. I to this day can not distingish from the mods from the actual game. If anyone feels they can tell the mods apart: please let me know.

Gameplay

This is Koreans playing. These are pros. I doubt none of us here are pros.

Nope. I usually play Use Map Settings and suck at the regular game

The Koreans are currently Beta Testing the Starcraft 2 Beta. So needless to say, blizzard has their bases covered.

And use map settings is a good idea. 100% of the time.

I refuse until II comes out.

There's just really no point until they finally decide to do otherwise since apparently gameplay's changed quite a bit since the mid 90s.

And no, I'm not that great at RTSes.

I play on random occasions. I have plans for this forum that I think the community may enjoy. Starting with online games literally anyone can play. Starcraft is one of them, and thanks to SC being a really simple RTS game to pick up (albet difficult to master), I think anyone can get into this. If anyone want's to play along, send a PM or post in this thread whenever you are going to set up an online game! I know I will on my days off, so don't wait on me! Enjoy the game!

StarCraft/BroodWar may have issues on newer operating systems (that is, on Windows, from Vista onwards). On MacOS there is an own version which should run smoothly, as for Linux there is always Wine.
On Windows 7 most people can resolve issues by simply klling explorer.exe before starting the game (as this is difficult to do in-game, a small batch which terminates explorer.exe, starts Broodwar and restores the Explorer after exiting the game should suffice), but personally didn't play too many matches on Windows 7 yet.

Sweet cute game, really nice and entertaining campaigns - albeit due to its age quite challenging, if you attempt to play online. The first few hundred games you will literally be slaughtered if you don't invest some serious time into practicing it. On the other hand the balance is just perfect, and most funmaps are really nice.
I can recommend easy-to-pick-up ones like Turret Defense, Random Beacon Defense, as well as those RPs (not RPGs) or even something like BattleShip command, which is a lot of fun, involving some serious strategy (but sadly is played rarely and requires a team not consisting of morons).

Let's see if SC2 can live up. But even if not, this game has to be bought, although it will be split up in three own games.

Yeah, I try to play sc seriously when I have time and people. iCCup at my level (D+ to C-) is heavy on better players smurfing and also on people who cheese every game (no problem with that, it's just that I would like a long game now and then) so that can be frustrating. Not to mention, since I got this new computer I've been too lazy to get iCCup working again (a pain on Linux, you might imagine.)

I main Zerg but I have decent macro with Protoss and my Terran is garbage. Originally I played Protoss because reaver control is sexy but now I play Zerg because it allows the greatest variety of tech switch mindgames.

I'm konekotyriin on AIM and miasmir on gmail / gtalk and koneko.tyriin on skype if anyone wants a game, I'm trying to be online frequently. I'll probably also play UMS games if it's with you guys, and I love the Team Melee mode too (shared control of units across the team) so if it turns out we're all terribly unevenly matched we can do something with that.

..What? I've had no problems on several installed of both Vista and 7.

Me either. I know the older discs have a harder time playing them. But there is a patch out for it.

Or you can buy the new Battle Chest, which says right on the box Win7 compatible.

Hell I even played it on Vista and it works fine.

Tug of War sounds vaguely familiar, and I'm almost certain I know what SCV Football is. These memories are, however, old as dirt.

So, yeah, I've been playing StarCraft on and off for nearly as long as I can remember. I, too, was particularly fond of "Use Map Settings" maps, but I usually wound up playing maps like "(Whatever) Defense" all the time because my favorite games usually involved a lot of work to get anybody to join. (Movie Maker comes to mind along with a few RPG style maps, although I'm sure there are many others.)
Regardless, I'd be willing to play some custom maps on battle.net sometime if that's the plan.

I'm sure the latest patch fixes Vista/7 support. No CD-key check, too. Makes things sooooo much simpler.

...Why did I say CD-key? Sorry.

CD-ROM check. CD-key is still required but you don't need the CD in the drive after installing. Still easier.
