Yes i know about the other thread but this will have step by step how to do and in future a few lvs ( I Don't know all the rules yet)

Note I have only got this to work with multicard

1. download these files if you don't already have them
-NSMB editor 4 or 5 (and inbetween):http://jul.rustedlogic.net/thread.php?id=5814
-NARC explorer 2:http://treeki.shacknet.nu/
-new super mario bros rom: google it

2.Edit the multiplayer levels normally.
BUT NO!!!!(If you dont follow the rules the screen will go black)
-changing tilesets
-Adding sprites or backgrounds

3.Change from level editor to file browser

4.open
-folder file system
-files
-ARCHIVE
Extract files (only extract the ones you want)
Dat_Basement.narc (Underground)
Dat_Field.narc (SMB1-1)
Dat_Fort.narc (castle)
Dat_Ice.narc (Ice world)
Dat_Pipe.narc (pipe world)
then close ARCHIVE and open
-Course
Extract files (only extract the ones you want)
J01_1.bin (SMB1-1)
J01_1_bgdat.bin (SMB1-1)
J02_1.bin (Underground)
J02_1_bgdat.bin (Underground)
J03_1.bin (Ice world)
J03_1_bgdat.bin (Ice world)
J04_1.bin (pipe world)
J04_1_bgdat.bin (pipe world)
J05_1.bin (castle)
J05_1_bgdat.bin (castle)

5.Now open NARC Explorer 2 and open the narcs, and click reinsert then put

-Dat_Field.narc (SMB1-1)
J01_1.bin
J01_1_bgdat.bin

-Dat_Basement.narc (Underground)
J02_1.bin
J02_1_bgdat.bin

-Dat_Ice.narc (Ice world)
J03_1.bin
J03_1_bgdat.bin

-Dat_Pipe.narc (pipe world)
J04_1.bin
J04_1_bgdat.bin

-Dat_Fort.narc (castle)
J05_1.bin (castle)
J05_1_bgdat.bin (castle)

6.Now go back to NSMB editor
go back to file system and replace the new narks over the old ones
(after this done)

Thanks to Treeki, Camewel, dirbaio

If anyone knows how to
-Add sprites
-Add background
-change tilesets
-or get ds download play to work
Please post

Well I recently figured out how to change tilesets, but I haven't tested it yet due to having only one flash card. I'll borrow my friends again and write that up in full later.
Dirbaio reports success in DS Download play, and I don't exactly know what he did.

I once tested levels a while back with ds download and it worked... I can test it again and report what happened.

If you were to take a glance at the original thread, that's what we're working on now.

Amazing walkthrough here. Thanks for the quick write up in the Original Post. I'd been wondering if it were possible to do this, and only recently found the editing options

After getting nsmb for wii, it really leaves me wondering why they took out the 2 player co op for DS... Hell, I prefer playing the game on ds, than on the wii... They're almost the same game anyways!

I'll have a drink or two in honor of the person who figures out how to make the ds download play work with modified levels!

also, Does anyone think it's possible to somehow make a new menu for nsmb ds, mvl menus, somehow unlocking the ability to play all the single player levels (a la wii) in mario vs luigi mode?

That would all be abysmally complicated, as we would need to fully rewrite the game code.

I figured as much, but as it seems like that's how it was originally meant to be in the ds version (as those e3 vids show, circulating), I also figured maybe the menus were still contained in the game somewhere... Was worth a shot, I guess

No such luck. The only beta things left in there that we know of so far are the beta levels, unused entrances and the beta blocks.

Probably a stupid question but say me and a friend had the same modded ROM is there any way we could both play against each other online?

Yes, it is a stupid question.

Of course, if you edit the levels, and follow the instructions at the other MvsL hacking thread, it will work as long as you both have the same ROM.
