Testing mess of a layout
It is not so much as WHAT is it but more like how is it done... The same enemy in Shadow Temple isn't as scary as in the Well, becouse in one you have a huge zombie killing sword and stuff while in the other you just have a kid's knife.

Also Mario stopping breathing in Super Mario 64.

Monster Party really scared the crap out of me. Those first few seconds when you walk past the first half of the stage?? Really disgusting. Also I watched the ending and that was pretty frightening as well.

I am 100% convinced Nintendo's censors only bothered to check the title screen (where they suggested the blood be turned green) and half of stage 1. "Oh, look at all the happy faces! Surely this game needs no further inspection!"

Just like nobody bothered to play Bionic Commando until the end...
