So tonight for my Energy homework my roommate (who is also in the class) and I have to do an energy audit where we track the amount of energy we use in a week for every electronic device we have. Everything was going fine until we realize that we have to count the overhead lights in addition to everything else. The ceilings in this room are easily 10 feet high. So what do we do? Well we use the only things we can find to get up to the light panel: chairs.

The lights are those long tube ones and are behind a hinged panel. The chairs in the room only give about 1 1/2 feet height so we're stretching to the max to open the hinge. In addition, these chairs have built-in rockers on the backs of the legs. Basically, you lean back and they lean back with you. I'll bet you can already see where this is leading.

So we get the light out to look at its wattage with no problems. We even manage to get the light in okay. When we go to put the panel back though, it doesn't want to fit in like it should. My side goes in, his doesn't. Leaning towards his side to look at why it's not going in all of a sudden I'm on the floor with a leg in pain, a bit of lost breath and a flipped chair.

So I get on the bed to recover for a second. Roommate is fine though he notices that I landed on his foot as I fell. Turns out my thigh landed on him so hard that I broke a blood vessel in his foot. Well damn that explains why my leg hurts so much, his foot was on the edge of the chair already meaning that I hit the chair's edge on the way down. Makes perfect sense as to why it hurts.

So I recover and get up. Leg still hurts a bunch (still does as I type this) and I go over to once again look at the panel. He gets back up on the chair and suddenly we're hearing a weird sound coming from the chair. Upon inspection we discover the following:

Turns out I landed on his foot and the chair with my thigh SO HARD that I actually broke the chair leg THROUGH HIS FOOT. Jesus H Christ man. So then I swore a few times in amazement, swore at the fact that now I have a broken chair that will need replacing and probably cost me about ~$25 to Residence Life and then we went down to the RA office to let them know slash ask for a stepladder to finish putting up the panel.

So that took 40 minutes and since then I haven't been able to concentrate on the homework because I've been too busy nursing my leg in general, just distracted by the whole thing. I'm starting to get worried about it, it hurts like hell to move around a lot. If it hurts worse in the morning, I may go to the health center to have it looked at.

tl;dr: I broke a chair with my thigh trying to do some homework.

I hope you're happy Energy class.

Ouch, that looks painful. Well, best of luck not getting hurt with the rest of your Energy Class assignments

I, too, was expecting an entirely different thing. Alas

On a related note, though, that chair looks too similar to the one I'm sitting in right now. Better try not to break it.

Hope your leg is okay, too. That sounds painful

Well the leg is hurting worse now and apparently I hit my rib cage when I fell too. I may have bruised one of them because it hurts there as well. I'm definitely going to pass on my 9:30 class and head over to the Health Center across campus. How I get there is another issue. It hurts to walk a lot and it's most likely a 15-20 minute walk from here to the center. I guess I'll try for a bus but even then none of them get too close. Hopefully it'll be nothing but a bruise. Crutches might be nice to help walk around on...

That actually sounds really painful. Sucks to hear you're beat up like that.
Similar story though, in Grade 5 we were jackasses and kicking the wall in the classroom for no reason, and I ended up kicking hard enough to put a hole through the wall. Oops.

I don't even want to imagine how much that must have hurt, initially. Hope you get well soon.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Heheh, that's kinda funny. :p

Anyway, likely not a big deal. When you bang something, it's always worse the next day, like soreness from exercise. :p As long as you can walk at all, it's not likely a broken bone or anything terribly serious. Just need to wait for the muscle to repair itself.

That's got to hurt. Hope it gets better, FP

My old chair was slowly falling apart over time, but not like that. More like one of the armrests fell off twice and eventually it would tilt like crazy if I sat down. It seems that the screws that held it together would unscrew a lot. So now I have a folding wooden chair with a pillow on it instead of my old fancy wheeled spinning chair.

Waking up this morning this leg is in PAIN. Walking around is tough because of how severe it is. I'm hobbling around the dorm room just to get across it. We're on the way to the health center to get it looked at.

Hopefully your injury isn't anything too major FP .

From what you said about the rockers on the chairs (and from what i can see in the picture) I highly doubt that I ever would have been able to stand still on one of those chairs, my ability to balance on things really sucks .

Leg still hurts. Health center gave me nothing but advil and an icepack. Side hurts as well from where I landed but it just seems to be another bruise.

Roommate's foot is fine, doesn't even hurt he says.

Reminds me of when, as a kid, I'd accidentally run head-on into metal poles.

For some reason I never got a concussion. Instead, I now have SUPER FOREHEAD SMASHING POWERS.

I did that with a thing of pile wood before. I'm surprised I wasn't knocked out.
