Overview.

A bunch of new things, faster, optimized for multiple cores. We're also looking at a security suite being added as well. Even registering has been streamlined so you don't have to use a key anymore. Looking very nice.

Grab it at the main page.

I've been using this for a few days. It's quite nice and it's far faster than the old version.

I was keeping tabs on it from the beta, but I missed out on its actual release when it happened. I knew it was going to be faster but I didn't know how much so until I got my hands on it.

Great, this comes out right as I switch to MSE.

Should I switch back or just stay? I like how MSE is most of the time not in the way but it hates big files.

I was told to swap all Avast 4.8 systems to MSE about two weeks ago. There were no problem with Avast for months that I had it in, and plenty with its predecessor on these comps, AVG.

Within a week I was battling viruses on a comp in two separate incidents (FakeAlert/Vundo).

Up to you...it does somewhat decently but Avast has stayed solid for a long time for a reason...and if MS can't catch its own security vulnerabilities in its OS over 17 years (see recent thread) it's a good bet their security software has its own share of problems as well.

woowowowowo.

MSE can't catch Vundo? Now I exercise common sense when I surf but everyone can have a brain fart every now and then...

And I really don't wanna get vundo again...

Guess it's back to Avast for me.

It couldn't catch this particular variant of it. There was that fake 'System Security' dialog that came up with it and all the jazz about how your system is infected and that you need to buy the software to make it run. This particular one shut task manager off and made it to where all programs caused the dialog to appear about it being 'infected' when it really wasn't and ended up not running the file. Also created a hook in IE (that's what the user was running) to 127.0.0.1:5555 and the hosts file was screwed.

Did a Safe Mode reboot with Hi-Ren's. Killed it with ComboFix, SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot S&D (which picked up on the proxy). Left Avast! on the computer afterwards and haven't heard complaints since.

So yeah just installed it, and I love how they FINALLY fixed the user interface so that it both looks good and is actually easy to use.

Very nice.

Oh and, the speed is good too.

I like the new interface much better than the previous one. Glad to see it no longer looks like a badly designed media player skin or something. The Silent/Gaming mode looks pretty useful too.

Glitch-out occured on a fresh install of 7 x64 with this version, just to let you know. It was on an HP Pavilion. For whatever reason, putting the Avast on first then doing a bunch of driver installs caused the thing to say that the program refused to start or was inconsistent. 4.8 didn't have this problem.

Just putting that out there for those who try this. It might be fixed in later program updates.

I'll wait until they've got most of the major bugs ironed out.

e: on that note i had to uninstall 5, since i didn't want to risk having even the slightest bit of instability. I should've just stuck with 4.8 (which was working fine.)

interface
the fact that whenever I try to do a simple task like load a web page or download a file my entire system lags to the point of near-unusability. Seriously what. My computer isn't exactly the greatest but it should at least be able to handle that.

Back on 4.8, at least for now.

That's weird

I've noticed no slowdown from upgrading. My computer is pretty powerful but it runs the same as 4.8 (or better) - and I'm pretty sure I'd have noticed issues, because I push this computer a lot (two OSes running at once, Wii emulation, etc).

Works nice and smooth here, but then again, I use Windows XP x64, which they probably have more experience dealing with.

W7 x64 is starting to get noted for its problems with Avast 5 it seems.

That an no boot-time scanning in 64-bit OSes.

Kinda sucks.

Avast prompted me to update, and so I did. The new layout is kinda nice, and I love orange/gray color schemes, even if it is a little too flashy. Oh yeah, but there's just one problem...

the scan buttons don't work. In fact, they're blank. In fact, I can't scan at all, because custom scans blank out when I try to activate them. Oh yeah, and it will complain at you turn off automatic virus definition updates, unlike older versions.

And, by default, when an update is done, there's a voice sound clip that says it.

Last I checked, avast 4 did that too...

I've been using it for a few days now. It works really well here.

Doesn't make it any less retarded in my eyes.
