So, what IM clients do you use?
I used to have MSN, QIP (for ICQ) and Skype running on my computer all the time, along with Gmail for Google Talk and AIM. Recently I switched to Miranda IM, because MSN was getting bloated and I just wanted to have everything on one place. Since them, I've never looked back, and also included the Facebook protocol in there (I hate Facebook, but people have it and it's more then often the only way to chat with them). It also has support for Skype, but the official client has to be running in the background, because the developers suck and made sure NOBODY reverse-engineers their protocol. It's better then nothing, I guess.
I've also imported all my history I could collect in there, which means my home.dat database file is now almost 10 MB :O

What IM do you use? Do you use an unofficial client? I've heard Pidgin and Trillian are also a good alternative, anyone has experience with them?

EDIT: Maybe I should've posted this in Computers / Technology... Could a mod move it if necessary, please?

Lain's post №479

I personally use Messenger for chatting, since most of my contacts (friends and what have you) are on there.

I have Skype, but I barely use it. I also have Pidgin for when I need to go onto AIM.

If I were on a Mac though, I would be using Adium.

Lessee.. I use IRC almost exclusively for messaging people, but sometimes Skype as well. I use MSN a lot for work, but little else.

I used AIM at one point, but don't.

Lastly, I use the Steam IM client from time to time to talk to IRL friends.

I use Trillian which allows me to connect to multiple accounts at the same time (such as my MSN and AIM accounts). I also use Skype the sometimes, although not as often as I would like (it's really hard for me to get enough privacy to have a Skype conversation with someone at my house).

I use IRC 24/7 as long as I have connection.

For IM clients I stick with only skype. It does what MSN does in terms of texting and it have a none broken calling function.

I use MSN/Windows Live Messenger. I have Steam, too, if that counts, but I forgot my password so I can't log on away from home.

I'm always on AIM/mIRC and sometimes MSN/Skype. The former group just so happens to be the best way to contact most of those I know, although I have to get on MSN at times to contact a particular person or two. Skype is just for those days when others and I want to speak verbally rather than textually.

I use AIM via Pidgin. It has been my IM network of choice since 2003 and I never felt the need to be on multiple IM systems. I did use YIM briefly for 1 board. Other than that, I use mIRC for IRC. I have Skype but I'm almost never on.

Correcting him, he means Skype for the second sentence...

I use Trillian as well. Works, doesn't crash, does its job.

I use Pidgin for AIM, IRC and occasionally Facebook IM. Not the best program in the world, but it does the job.

I use Pidgin as my main client for IM. File transfers are broken on it for me, but apparently not anybody else I know who uses Pidgin. I have no idea why. I hop on MirandaIM if I need a file transferred.

As for protocols... I use AIM/MSN. I'm on MSN/my private AIM name the most often, followed by my public AIM name which you might catch me on sometimes, and might not.

As for IRC, I use mIRC. I can't stand X-Chat on Windows.

mIRC for IRC and that's it. I don't use an AIM program.

Though I'm on Mibbit right now since I'm in a computer lab.

Protocols? AIM, YIM, MSN, Skype, and of course IRC.

My client of choice depends on what OS I'm on, though.

I'll use Miranda IM on Windows, Pidgin under Linux, and iChat on OS X (because I don't care as much for MSN/YIM, really. I'd use Adium if I talked more on those, though).

As for IRC clients... mIRC on Windows, and X-Chat on Linux and OS X. Sometimes I'll appear from my PSP when I'm not at one of my computers, and on Mibbit from college.

I use IRC and GAIM! That's right, I've never updated it.

Mostly I use GAIM to talk to one or two people tops, I have very few people on the whitelist. I dislike people intruding on my moments of peace, so I don't appear much.

Funny thing with Trillian, when I have Skype, it brings up the Skype program anyway, so when I get an IM, I'll get two windows flashing at me.
