Although it seems to me that UAE only has 1 thing going for it: oil. When it runs low/out and people are using different forms of energy, there goes their economy.
Sigh, what's the point of building a tower so tall when the surrounding city is hideous. (from a tourist point of view)
I'd still rather go to Paris and see the much shorter Eiffel Tower.
Also, a few days ago the tower was renamed to "Burj Khalifa".

Uh, the reason tourists typically visit Dubai is to see the almost stupid number of architectural wonders they have there, and this can only add to those numbers. Compared to most cities, Dubai is hardly an "ugly" one.

Am I the only one who thinks it's ugly? I mean c'mon. It's a bunch of cylinders. Big whoop.

No, you're not the only one. As I previously mentioned, I'd rather go to Paris and look at the (much shorter) Eiffel Tower during the night.

Yeeeeeeeeeeah...I wouldn't be caught dead in the top floors of that thing. I don't think my body would allow me to go up there.

Not to mention that they've essentially created the world's largest potential terrorist target, that guarantees no hope of escape for those trapped inside if something like 9-11 ever occurs there. Not that Dubai is on anybody's hit list or anything, but still, if a major inextinguishable fire ever occurs there that is intense enough to cause the whole thing to collapse, then everyone above the fire is screwed. This is why I've never wanted to work/live in anything as tall as a skyscraper. You have no escape route in case of emergency.
I'm actually curious about the security standards/precautions in that building. I mean, you have to have pretty solid construction just to make something that high, but it is Dubai.
As for the destruction of the tower - I can't image anything other than an airplane knocking that thing down. You'd have to heat the beams QUITE hot for anything like 9/11 or something to happen.

I love how for some people, this turned into a country bashing, and derailed from simple architectural wonder. But then again, just like with Zelda, you can't please everyone.
