That would be the sound my computer now makes every five minutes.
It's not a sound that I've heard before...but me thinks that it's the sound of my hard drive starting to fail. And this is the only 'computer' around the house that works, so that's obviously not a good thing. (PS3 for internet if that has to happen, but...) So can someone tell me if that's what is actually starting to happen / what I should check to make sure what is happening / (if it's something else) how to fix it?

(Need another computer anyways...this one is just outdated and I say there should be two computers in this house anyways)

I've also heard that when there was a wire too close to a fan. :/

I'd open up the tower and observe what happens inside when those noises happen. If it is coming from the hard drive, I'd get a second internal hard drive, copy everything on your failing drive while you still can, then switch the cables so that your system loads onto the new drive while the old one fails but the system is still safe.

I've only ever had a hard drive fail on me once... it happened fairly recently, when I was moving stuff to my new place

It lasted me a good five years, though... although my old computer has also needed a CMOS battery change too

In your case, maybe the PC speaker is warning you that your motherboard or CPU is overheating. Try checking the power supply and fans, to see if they're working...

Wow. I've used a lot of very old computers. But none ever needed a new CMOS battery.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I've had a couple hard drives fail on me, but it was more of the CLICKclick CLICKclick CLICKclick type of failure.

Also, my old computer is in need of a CMOS battery. Luckily it's just a simple CR2032 watch battery.

That occasional buzzing as has been said, indicates either some PC speaker alarm or some kind of mechanical thing going on, likely a hard drive or optical drive...I have had optical drives randomly spin up and spin down making a sorta buzzing sound.

A wire hitting a fan. That's what it is, 90% of the time, if it's a high pitched BZZZZ only every 5 minutes. I've seen it in action on my computer.

1. Computer is silent.
2. Fan speeds up due to computer use.
3. Wire sucked into fan.
4. BZZZZZZ
5. Fan slows down eventually.
6. Wire no longer bumping against fan.
7. No BZZZZ.

Only solution is to open up the case and move that wire away from the fan.
