VMWare Server is pretty annoying. It has this really awful web based AJAX interface thingy that's really slow, buggy and broken. It even gave me an "Error 200 OK" message once. :|

Binary stuff that needs some ancient version of glibc.

Source code that needs gcc 2.xx to compile properly.

On top of those two things, projects that seem useful but have been abandoned and unmaintained for a while, and contain annoying bugs and whatnot.

Crappy wireless routers. I have yet to find a 99% reliable wireless router. I'm not even asking for up all the time, but being buggy, slow or just downright droppy really is unacceptable. My old router, some kind of modern Linksys, had all kinds of problems. It dropped the connection, crashed, rebooted, etc a lot, until it finally just pretty much gave up. You could connect to it wirelessly, but you couldn't access anything, not even the config page, even after a full wipe/restart (hold reset button for ~30 seconds.). DHCP didn't respond, specifying a static IP did nothing either. It was a bit over $100, too. Damn crap. My current Netgear one is alright, but it's starting to develop some reliability issues as well, but it might just need a reboot (Though having to reboot these things seems silly anyway. It should just stay stable!).

They are a bit expensive, I know, but we've got a previous-gen Apple AirPort Extreme base station that hasn't yet had a single issue after about 8 months of constant use. It happily serves 5 wired devices (using an old SMC hub) and 5 wireless ones without so much as a hiccup. Also on rare occasions, I have to use the "Secure Empty Trash" option to delete some files that are flagged as being in use when they actually are not (I'm looking at YOU, Cyberduck Spotlight Importer. But that's more an issue with Cyberduck than with OS X.)

XP's crazy Automatic Windows Updates...

It will ask you to restart a couple of times... You deny it, of course... Then, it gives you 5 minutes to deny it... You deny it 3-6 times, then the 'Don't Restart Now' button DISAPPEARS!!!!!!

Also, Vista Basic's lack of Aero....
I hacked my .msstyle to fix that, and WinFlip for my "Win + Tab" task switcher......
Taskbar thumbnails don't appeal to me on Vista, but they do on 7 for some reason...

Adobe's crazy automatic updates. I guess after a decade (more?) of reading PDF files, we still haven't perfected how to read a PDF file.

Needless to say, I found a third-party reader.

FoxIt? I love FoxIt Reader, I switched from Adobe Reader to FoxIt a couple years ago, and have never looked back

At least it doesn't like to update every 2 weeks or so, unlike official Adobe products

I've used Foxit in the past, but this time around it's Sumatra PDF. I added it to the Usefull Freeware thread.

Adobe's PDF viewer is slow, in my experience. I switched to SumatraPDF and had no problems.

Then again, I don't use much commercial software. I use OpenOffice.org and pretty much everyone else at my school uses Microsoft Office.

I hate it when there are people who stubbornly refuse to install anything that could help them. These are people who stick with IE, or who have Firefox but don't install something like NoScript, and then give no real reason other than "I don't want to install a bunch of crap."

... What? It's understandable if it's not your machine and not your decision, but really. NoScript is less than a megabyte (or maybe slightly larger.) No excuse NOT to have it, even if you're on dialup, on any operating system.

This complaint arises from having to reinstall Windows for the fifth time in three weeks on the slow Sempron-powered PC my sister uses because she insists on going to questionable gaming sites, in IE6 (she refuses to let me install anything else because IE7 and 8 "don't have menus" and "Firefox is too slow") and keeps getting infected by a bunch of malware in ads that wrecks pretty much everything.

Install Windows Defender, configure it to hide the tray icon and never prompt for anything. She won't ever know, and it'll stop most of those infections.

The icons rearranging when the resolution is changed and then not going back to where they should be.

Also, I usually prefer icons and files to be in alphabetical order. This means:
- When they're almost in alphabetical order, sorting by name should fix the few stragglers rather than putting everything in reverse alphabetical order. This also applies when new files tend to be tacked on to the end of the file list instead of being put where they belong.
- What's with the desktop icons? It's like they're first sorted by some set of broad classes and I don't know how the computer determines which class an icon is in. I've got it that 1 is folders.

I remember sometimes in Windows, when a program writes a file in to a folder, it'll occasionally end up waaaaay off to the right or really far down or just crammed in the middle of some icons, not really lined up or close to anything. Not too much of a problem when you use list or details view like I tend to, nowadays. I think Finder did this a few times in my Applications folder in Mac OS, too, even after selecting to sort by name... until I made it just display as a list.

Hey! Your computer just fucked up royally and I have a really good fix and I'm a bout a million times better at computers than you are so WHY DO YOU NOT LISTEN!?


What I hate more is that all computers like to act the opposite as soon as someone is around, so it seems like I suck at computers.
