My computer, the one that shat itself last night, had a widescreen LCD 1600x1050 screen. Now I'm temporarily using dad's computer, and I have to deal with a standard CRT screen of 1024x768.

THIS IS SO UNCOMFORTABLE. D:

Back when I had high-speed Internet and my parents still had dialup, it was painful checking boards and such from their house. Now they have DSL, so it's not much of a problem unless my dad is online at the same time and I'm in Livestream.

I hate having to use my old computer to check the Internet or something, because it only has 64 MB of RAM and 800x600 resolution...

I'm so used to higher resolutions and more RAM

Back in my day, we used 640 by 480 Windows 3.1 60hz refresh rate 56k modem with Netscape Navigator 3.0.

33 MHz, 8 MB RAM, and two hard drives barely totalling 1 GB of space.

1 MB ISA Video card, filled up the bay, also an ancient Sound Blaster 16.

Also, I wasn't allowed on for longer than 30-60 minutes at a time.

The computer came fresh from a dumpster.

We didn't like it very much.

Try sharing with a parent who ends up opening several (30) tabs of coupons, flash websites, GMail, and Facebook. And uses the computer for hours at a time and will force you off for their wants. It's not a "Need" to get on Facebook and 'harvest' things that took days to 'grow'.

(also this is the only computer, ps3 doesn't count)

Well, youngsters, when I was little we had a Commodore 64. It had 64 kilobytes of RAM, no hard drive at all, an external floppy drive with 166 KB capacity per disk side, and you had to flip the physical disk over to access the other side, a 6510 single-core CPU that ran at 1 MHz, and a maximum 320*200 resolution with 16 colours.

When it came out in 1982, it was considered state-of-the art.

I remember the Apple II series, since they used them a lot in elementary schools around here back in the day

However, the Apple II's sound paled in comparison with the Commodore 64... the Apple II only had a beeper, until the IIgs, which added an Ensoniq sound chip

By the time I reached middle school, it was mostly Windows 3.1 and 95... hell, even by high school, they were still on Windows 98, and not something like 2000...

Well my first CPU was 4 times as fast as yours.

Actually it still is, with my o/ced Core i7.

And who are you calling youngsters?

I remember elementary and middle school having Windows 95/98 based PCs. By the time I got the high school, we had XP and almost all new equipment. Probably one of the good things about that school (which was mostly shit).

Windows 3.1 mostly sucked... I remember those "General Protection Fault" messages that would come up a lot if you were low on system resources

That was pretty common back in the days of computers with 4 MB of RAM or less

My school near Buffalo used nothing but Apple computers, IIRC. Then, we moved to Michigan and they were IBM-compatible machines, usually Dells.

But Windows 3.1 was epic! I had a lot of fun with it, even if I wasn't incredibly productive. That's when I was still using a 486 with 4MB of RAM. I kinda miss it a little bit.

Windows 3.1 did have some great games though... I can think of Chip's Challenge, JezzBall, and various solitaire variants

Chip's Challenge was amazing.

I once beat the Minesweeper on easy in 6 seconds.

Microsoft had 4 volumes of game packs. There was some good stuff. I was addicted to Tetris for a while.

I liked Windows 3.1

Even today, I prefer the Program Manager style of windows with icons over the Start menu.

At least I still have an older computer to play these games on... since 64-bit OSes can't run 16-bit games

I totally want to install Windows Chicago (the first leaked build of Windows 95) with the Start button prototype, which was three buttons in the same area at the time.

Up until Win98 (ME?) you could edit win.ini and make that your window manager.

Which was an AWESOME netzero hack. Netzero ads depended on the shell. When you switched shells, you got no ads but the free internet still worked.
