I'd probably consider contacting DreamHost about it (3 minutes of constant clock drift is a bit strange), but .. eh.

Might as well, just with a low-priority ticket, I guess.

I had to stop looking at the board clock for the time while on break at work.

Yea... this clock problem has been bugging me for a while... (not like I use it for anything, since I use my Windows 7 clock for the time anyway )

I sent them a support ticket.

Took the opportunity to bring up the load issue, too:

The clock has annoyed me a bit, but I'm used to clocks being off. My old alarm clock ran way fast and would gain likme 5 minutes in a few weeks. A Proboard I posted at had a horrible clock that could be more than 10 minutes off.

Currently, I have 2 clocks in my bedroom, 1 a bit later than the other, then my computer clock is still later and Jul's clock even later

Looks like it's been fixed, it's now only about 8 seconds off for me.

Sorry about that. I've gone ahead and sync'd the times, and you're all
set to go!

We've had a recent bout of spammers and not-so-friendly-folk signing up
lately that we've been trying to combat. Unfortunately, they keep on
using utilities that are... problematic, to say the least. We're
continuing to monitor the servers and do the best we can to keep it under
control and prevent these problems from happening.

The other thing you can do to try and avoid the 500 errors you're getting
is to place limits on how often spiders can grab pages from your site.
Right now I'm showing that GoogleBot has 4157 hits and Yahoo Crawler has
2534 hits in just 8 hours (around 500 hits an hour for GoogleBot!). With
the way the shared hosting servers are configured, if you have too many
processes running (using a ton of memory each) or any process exceeds the
limits we had to place on our shared hosting servers. (While you have
unlimited storage and bandwidth, we had to place a limit on how much RAM
any single user can use on the servers to prevent any single user from
causing the server to crash and crawl.)

2010-01-06 04:39:51 procwatch2 INFO: Process(pid=17830, name='php5.cgi',
uid=jul): kill for total RAM

Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Wesley S.

That guy was quite helpful for a support guy. Usually you don't hear many good support stories.

And they even gave a valid reason for what they did. Winner!

Well, at least now we know what's causing the lag.

There's a reason I stick with DreamHost. 95% of the support tickets I've filed were extremely informative and solved the issue (or came close). The other 5% were a mix of really bizarre problems that made no sense and large, system-wide outages that were just too big to personally reply to.

They have their own share of problems, but cheap hosting at $9.95 that's mostly stable and run by people that give a shit? Oh yes.

Support Tickets like that are one of the reasons I love dreamhost and want to have it's babies.

I had Lunarpages back in the days when I used paid hosting. I don't remember having much trouble with them, but who knows if they're even around anymore (this was 2003 to 2005).

I use XAMPP for testing web pages, PHP scripts, etc., since I don't necessarily need web hosting for that...

However, if I need a paid webhost, I might actually use Dreamhost

I also use Dreamhost, but I don't have fancy graphs, so many of my tickets are composed of "Everything is down yet again", "The server's up but it's not hooked up to the outside world/DNS", and the favorite "Help, I'm trapped in a time dilation field!"

The render time graph is actually surprisingly easy to make, if you can believe it. Hell, I could whip one up for you, but it requires an active page that doesn't change much (e.g., the index page of the board, which mine uses)

(and yes, I know it changes often, but the amount of data/processing it fetches usually doesn't)

I never payed a lot of attention to the clock being off, since I have an alarm clock right next to the monitor. Thus once again proving I don't pay attention to small things like that.
