Yeah, seeing a lot of empty forums just intimidates me. Several of the biggest boards I've seen (like Jul) have few forums, but they're all widely used.
I think it works out better to have less forums which are used more, instead of more forums which are used less. You can expand later on if needed, and it will be easier to find things and seem more active to prospective new members.
Indeed, having a few but active fora is very good to attract members. A lot of empty fora would just scare them away... I don't have a forum so I don't know, and I don't plan on making one, as I know it would just fail xD

Exactly, I used to be active on MFGG (a Mario fangaming board). It was a huge board - over 60 members online at once at peak times. They had 7 forums: General Chat, Fangame Discussion, Arts Board, Wifi and Online Gaming, Help and a board for spam/pointless crap (like Craziness here) which always had name changes.
Threads would get lost easily though, since there were always new threads being made everywhere. I think it's the biggest board I've been active on, and they had even less forums than Jul.
I prefer the amount of forums on Jul though. Losing threads on MFGG got really annoying. At least here, most threads stay active for more than a day.

You should go see Gaia Online With 20m users, and about 50k~ users online most of the time, the fora are always packed with new threads and stuff. A thread in their chatterbox (like craziness) can get out of the first page in a few seconds!

I've seen it before but I'm not a member there. I don't think I want to be I hate huge boards like that. I knew that place was big, but I didn't know it was as bad as that.

You can still post normally in fora like "Extended Discussion" and "Politics" (my most active ones ), those ones are much slower and a thread can survive on the first page for a day or two.

Enpty fora intimidate me as well. I think you should start with just a few and add more as the board grows.
Although I don't think that Anya is admin at that other board
I have that routine too! I'm in a totally different timezone though, so it worked out well for this spree.
I was just waking up when I saw this starting, then I joined. I'm +1 from the server.

I started it off this morning when I woke up, I was posting alone until you started as well.
I'm not sure how far off I am from the server, but I'm GMT+1 - it's 5:35pm here right now.
You're six hours away

Wait, where do you live then? I thought you lived in Finland because of the location in your profile.. but I'm pretty sure Finland is in Europe..
Nope, that's a joke but nobody seems to understand it. Korvatunturi is where the Finns tell their kids that Santa lives, and Joulupukki (what I have for a real name) is Santa Claus in Finnish.
