http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/04/world/africa/04uganda.html

This has been going on for quite a while now, I saw the article today and decided to show it to you all. To sum it up, after a visit by three American evangelists presented as "experts on homosexuality" and a few speeches on "how to make gay people straight, how gay men often sodomized teenage boys and how “the gay movement is an evil institution” whose goal is “to defeat the marriage-based society and replace it with a culture of sexual promiscuity,” Uganda is now considering a bill to criminalize homosexuality with punishments of up to the death penalty.

Now this makes me wonder how the West, and especially Obama, will react to this if they react at all...

This is so fucking ridiculous.

Reading the article just made it even worse. I don't even know what to say about it. People are insane..

Argh

Not all homosexual people are promiscuous, you know. Some have little or no interest in sex, some have average interest in sex, etc. And I never understood the "gay marriage weakens straight marriage" argument. AFAIK, most homosexual adults, like their heterosexual counterparts, have no interest in sex with kids or teens.

Don't you see, obviously Britney Spears' 55-hour marriage is much holier than the lifelong love of a gay couple ... at least to most Christians...

It's that argument that if kids see two men/women married together they too will think that it's okay and acceptable and then will 100% want to follow suit. You know, another right-wing/evangelical crackpot theory.

Which would suggest that straight couples can't have gay children. Their logic is amazing! :specialed:

Finally! Someone who gets the idea!

I hate how people act like gays are somehow completely wrong and repulsive for doing the exact same things as heterosexuals.

So many straight men are promiscuous. No one has a problem with it (and in many cases, it's encouraged). But guess what? If those same men were gay, everyone would treat it like the most disgusting thing ever. I don't agree with promiscuity, but that applies to every gender/sexuality.

Society is amazing.

They shouldn't be allowed to marry. They're weakening the marriage of sane people.

Gabu for President.

A certain subset of evangelicals seem to do nothing with their lives but oppress other people

That article is very out of date. I've followed this for a good three weeks. I doubt it'll pass. Basically, Rachel Maddow brought a lot of attention to this, and eventually got a lot of high-end conservatives and evangelicals, including Rick Warren, to speak out against this bill. A lot of Republican congressmen also have sent letters to Uganda's president, urging him to oppose the bill, and he said he'd veto the bill if it were passed.

Awesome.

I guess there are -some- sane people left after all. Emphasis on the some.

OMG, I love Rachel Maddow. First she reveals the secrets of that Storm Coming commercial and now this? Awesome! I did hear about the republicans sending a letter to the president but I have yet to hear anything about him saying he would veto the bill... Where did you get that?

If you've been following it for three weeks, why didn't you mention any of it to us? That's what this forum's for.

In any case, though, good to hear, though I'm kind of surprised someone like Rick Warhead would actually go against anything anti-homosexual.

I find it interesting that the people of Uganda wanted Americans to come speak to them. They probably wouldn't listen if it had been a group of three of their own people. This is actually common in most developing countries (or at least the ones that don't hate us )

Whew.

Not that I'd ever go to Uganda, but I don't think persecution of homosexuals should exist anywhere.

Yeah, but we still have like 30 countries to go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_by_country_or_territory

The world is full of so much hate...

Yeah, metro Detroit has a fuckload of immigrants from Saudi Arabia. Given their super-strict government, I understand why they leave their country. However, some bring their fundie values with them
