I got rid of all of my icons. I thought four was too much.

Anyhoo-- Doctor Who Xmas theme wallpaper. It's based off of the last two episodes that are set to air very soon.

Schala: Pretty much everyone I know in metro Detroit for which I've seen their desktops has hugely cluttered desktops (including myself), so icons are still popular in at least 1 place

I grew up with Windows 3.1, which predates the Start menu, so I'm more used to icons rather than a menu that vanishes whenever something weird happens. Usually when I'm using the Start menu it's for the list of frequently-accessed programs or to shut down the computer.

I've been doing that since System 7, but I remember my desktop getting really cluttered by the time I reached Windows 98

I often use the Recycle Bin to store unused desktop icons

I was like that with my old Macintosh too (here) ... I filled the desktop (not too hard when it only fits 56 icons), put it all in a "Desktop" folder, filled the desktop again, eventually made a "Desktop 2" folder And you can't blame it on not having the Start menu, since the apple menu was mostly the same ...

Then that completely changed to the opposite about as soon as I got a PC with Windows 95


But the recycle bin is always full of random trashed crap, sometimes thousands of files or a few gigabytes

I did that a lot back then (also gibberish names like "LLà" there) when I didn't feel like giving a full name or coming up with one

And that kept going for at least another year (on Windows), when I had folders like C:\A\F and D:\E\N

Windows 98 VM.

I had a cluttered desktop on Windows 95, but I ended up going right from that to caring about cleanliness when I moved to XP...

I miss my first XP wallpaper. If I remember right, it was some Fierce Deity Link wallpaper. This was back when 1280x1024 was actually pretty big, I think.
