Paulguy's Post configuration
Gentoo Linux and Windows 7 on my main desktop. I use Gentoo Linux primarily. I really try to like Windows, but some things I just miss and can't really recreate reliably in Windows, especially since Windows doesn't have that graphics driver misdetecting my TV so it sends the wrong color format and you can't change it, bug.

The macbook has cracked Windows 7 and Mac OS 10.6.2 on it. Mac OS is OK, but it's just way too dumbed down and a lot of the user interface is pretty silly.

Windows XP Home, 32bit. Building an inexpensive machine with 4 gigs soon, I will go to Windows 7. As the majority of my friends either use Vista or 7 and a lot of them is satisfying about Win7's performance, I'm blindly leaping into it. 35 Euros for that student version is quite nice. Maybe toying around with it a little, like setting up a dual boot system with (K)Ubuntu. Never got into Linux, except trying Knoppix via live-CD.

I just need to think if I either will get the 64bit Home Premium or Professional version (priced the same). As for components the only thing, which might not work, could be my DVB-T USB stick, but again, either the XP mode in the Pro version will do this, or I will try to get it done in a VM with XP. Then again, every important device like my printer has all needed drivers for Windows 7 64bit.

Work Desktop - Windows 7 Enterprise (x65)
Work Laptop - Windows 7 Professional (x64)
Other Work Laptop - Ubuntu Linux (9.10 I believe) (x86)
Home Desktop - Ubuntu Linux (9.10) (x86)
Dell Mini 10 - Ubuntu Linux (9.10) (x86)
Media PC (hooked up to my TV) - Mac OS X Snow Leopard

Wanna get another media PC (too hook up to my other TV), will probably end up running Windows 7 (just so I can run netflix streaming on it with boxee)

Also want to get a machine to serve as my server so I can store all my videos, music, roms, files etc on there as a file server and just connect via network shares to get the media on all my other PC's.

Xubuntu Linux. It works, and has all the goodness that comes with being Linux.

I used XP for a long time, and got intimately familiar with all its little quirks and bugs, being able to tweak it to be very nice and stable. However there was simply no way to get rid of so many annoying issues, and no goddamn way was I moving to Vista, so I ditched it.

I'm using XP right now on my friend's computer and I have it on all my backup PCs that I would make but at heart I love Vista and am probably the only person that I know who thinks so.

My home computer runs OSX 10.5 (I'll nab the upgrade disc for 10.6 eventually) with a dual boot to Windows XP. I spend all my time in OSX unless I'm playing games like TF2 which is the sole reason for me to have windows on here at all.

My netbook ran Ubuntu until it died a somewhat inexplicable and horrible death. Didn't mind it, but wouldn't use it as a primary OS.

The old iMac in the house runs OSX 10.4/OS9
Brother's computer runs Vista
Dad's laptop also runs WinXP.
I've got the old Win95/DOS PC sitting around too.

Linux is the best. Ubuntu! It NEVER hangs, is very reliable, virus-less, fast-booting even if you have been using it for years...

I only use Windows (xp) when i have no alternative. It's so shit! Micro$oft is making worse and worse software.

My laptop is Windows Vista Business SP2, I like it.

I would bump into Windows 7 Pro, but I have too much shit to move around and a bunch of programs I use that were a bitch to get a hold of that I don't want to look for again. Although, I'm not exactly comfortable with just having double the system requirements. I know, dumb reason there, but eh, it's just me.

7 actually uses less than Vista - despite the higher requirements.

Before I switched to 7, I was on XP. I had two virtual machines - one with Vista and one with 7. They both had 512mb of RAM.

The Vista machine ran out of memory completely while installing VMware Tools with nothing else open. The 7 machine ran totally smoothly and I could open several apps at once. Makes you think about how much MS screwed up Vista doesn't it?

Fair enough, Treeki. I still don't feel like backing everything up and having no way to do anything for however long it takes to get everything reinstalled. I'll just wait until I get around to building my desktop so that I can mess with my laptop more.

Yeah, I can understand that - but be sure to consider 7 if you ever do reformat/reinstall, or if Vista starts giving you problems for whatever reason. Despite the higher requirements, it runs far better than Vista even if you don't meet them. It's pretty much what the original Vista release should have been.

We have 7 on our main computer, XP on the other two. My mom doesn't care for change too much, so we've left XP on the two computers she uses.

I have a laptop running Windows XP 32-bit Service Pack 3, which dual-boots with Linux Ubuntu 9.04, and has Mac OS X 10.5.5 running in a Virtual Machine.
I use a USB stick for transferring data between the three.

EDIT:
I also have a Windows 3.1 box lying around somewhere...

I have XP Home/7 Ultimate (update-enabled, time-bomb-free RC) DualBoot on a laptop.
XP Home on 2 desktops and 2 laptops.
XP Pro on 3 desktops and one laptop.
98SE on one desktop.
Vista Basic/Ubuntu 9.04 Dual-Boot (WUBI) on one laptop.
DOS 6.0/Windows 3.11 on one desktop.
Windows 95 on 2 laptops.
Windows NT4.0 on a laptop.
(and just about every other decent OS on VirtualBox)

I would go for Pro if they are the same price, because Pro is Home Premium plus more... (nothing is removed from it)

edit:
Just FYI: For one, 7's Version Number is 6.1.7600... and also, Vista is basically "Windows 7 Beta"

Yea, I think that's weird... shouldn't Windows 7 be NT 7.0? And then you have Midori and Windows 8, which seem to be in development at the same time (I think Midori might be the code name for Windows 8 though... not sure)

I have a feeling that Midori will end up being like "ENT" (Even Newer Technology) and being marketed toward businesses at first, while the consumer Windows versions will still use NT until they release "Midori Home" or whatever

I only voted for Windows 7. However, in the past I used:

Home:
DOS, Win31, Win95/98, Win2000/XP
Suse Linux

School:
Fedora Linux
Solaris

I never used Vista somehow. Btw, the version numbers make sense considering that they really are almost the same exact OS. 100% driver compatibility, afaik.

Shiny new layout!
----------------------------------------------------

I used to use XP

Once 7 came out I threw that on everything I had... and somehow Ubuntu made it onto my laptop as well, but only for screwing around with things for fun.

In the way past I've had 95... Windows ME (Hey, it never crashed on ME!)
